"You child! What's so great about a doctorate? I'd rather you come back home a few years earlier," Mom said, pretending to scold.
But Dad seemed thoughtful and said, "You know, if Xiaoye really pursues a doctorate, he'd be the first one in the Wang family. That would indeed be an honor for our ancestors!"
That wasn't untrue.
Even including all of Wang Ye's cousins, none had earned a doctorate...

Wang Ye quickly chimed in: "Exactly, exactly, I want to be the first Doctorate in our family! Anyway, it's easier to get a doctorate there. After undergrad, another five years and you're pretty much guaranteed to graduate."
Mom clicked her tongue: "Five more years? That's such a long time!"
"Two years for a Master's and three for a Doctorate, that's already considered fast," Dad said, apparently more knowledgeable on the subject.
