Chapter 24 - NIGHT MARKET

By the time they both got to the dessert shop, the sun had gone down completely and the sky was now covered in a dark blue blanket with the pale crescent moon peeking its head from the clouds.

Although, the day was getting dark but the whole of City X was still as bright and bustling as ever with the locals still carrying out their normal activities. The whole place was shining with bright city lights, totally giving the place an illusion of an ever-lively city.

Jedrek parked his car in an available parking spot and got out to help Raine out of the car. She mumbled a small thanks to him and they both walked to the dessert shop.

As soon as the door was opened, they were greeted with the pleasant aroma of different french pastries filling the air. Raine smiled delightedly and took a deep breath taking in the fresh aroma of the freshly baked pastries.

She giggled softly and excitedly dragged Jedrek to a seat by the window which overlooked the pleasant view from the bright, bustling city. Jedrek followed her orders quietly and carefully pulled out a chair for her before sitting in the chair directly opposite hers.

Few minutes after they both settled down, a waiter approached them with a menu in his hands. He greeted them politely before handing over the menu to Jedrek. Jedrek didn't have any interest in the pastries and so he passed the menu to Raine instead.

Raine took the menu with a smile and a joyful countenance and after flipping through the pages for a while, she finally looked up at the waiter with a small smile hanging on her lips, "I'll have a bowl of strawberry macarons with some vanilla gelato, oh! and a piece of strawberry rhubarb cheesecake too, and..." she finally turned to Jedrek, silently inquiring with her eyes on what to order.

Jedrek caught her stare and held it for a few seconds before replying in a flat tone, "Just get me plain water."

The waiter nodded politely and then took their order before scurrying away to get them ready.

As soon as the waiter left, Jedrek turned to Raine, "You didn't have dinner yet then why order so little?"

Raine gazed at him with a jeering smile. Instead of replying to his question, she asked him a question, "How about you? Who comes to a dessert shop just to order water, hmm?"

She clasped her palm together and placed them on the table like a police officer interrogating a crime suspect.

Jedrek let out a short laugh after that. They were lucky that the dessert shop was dimly lit but even at that Raine could still feel some stares directed at their table.

"Other than Skye, I don't think I have seen any other man who likes sweet," he replied with a deep tone and then crossed his arm with his back slightly relaxed on the seat. He stared intently at the girl opposite him who didn't pay attention to him but now had her whole attention outside the window.

Across the dessert shop, there was a small night market where nearby traders sell some of their goods. The locals around the area seemed to love the night market because the whole place was filled with people but yet organized.

Seeing Raine's attention solely focused on the market, he guessed something must have piqued her interest and so he turned to look at the market trying to get a glimpse of what she was interested in.

He stared at the market for a while before returning his gaze back to her, "You often visit this night market often right?" he asked gently and his question seemed to have a hidden meaning behind them but Raine didn't notice and just nodded dazedly as her reply.

Jedrek let out a deep sigh with his gaze still fixated on her face and a conflicted feeling flashed across his eyes. "Do you..."

"Jed?"

He didn't get the time to complete his statement when a feminine voice interrupted him. He swallowed his words and then turned his head, now staring at a figure behind Raine.

Raine also heard the somewhat feminine voice calling his name. She immediately turned her head to him and followed his line of sight and when she spotted the person who called his name, she froze.
