Chapter 64 - 64- Uncle Sam

Veronica paid for their food the moment they finished and both of them left the hotel almost immediately. As they got to the main road, Matthew flagged down a taxi. However, Matthew whispered something to the ears of the taxi driver before the man zoomed off with them. She asked, "Where are we going?"

His reply was: "You will know ultimately."

"Why are you so secretive? After all there is nothing to hide."

"If you don't tell me where we are going, I will have to walk away from the taxi."

"Ok, ok," he said. "We are going to a man whom I know."

"And why should we go to a man whom you know? Should not I be moving forward, since I was getting late as testified by you? I mean won't it kill some more time for me?"

"I assure you Veronica, it will not kill time. Rather it will save enough time."

"Ok, let's see."

"You can trust me," he stated.

The taxi pulled up before a big solitary playground that had a mansion at the centre. Curiously, there were no human beings around there. Immediately they came out of the taxi cab, the driver sped away.

She asked, "Are you going to kill me in this lonely place?"

Matthew only smirked and headed towards the big house at the center before she could see the ground. There is also a long flat stretch of black concrete surface adorned with white stripes. She asked, "Why is there a concrete road with white stripes?"

Matthew 'sushed' her as they walked up to the only bungalow in that place. As he pressed the door bell, a strong male voice enquired through the intercom: "Who is this?"

The guest responded: "Uncle, it is me, Matthew."

The voice asked, "Who is Matthew?"

"Your hunting buddy's son, remember?"

"Oh, now I recognize your voice, my dear chap."

"Yes Uncle."

"Hmm, Matthew come on in."

As the door clicked open, Matthew and Veronica went in through a dimly lit narrow corridor.  There was a wooden coat stand and voices were being heard from within the warm apartment, and this made Veronica wonder: So this place is frequented by people.

"Uncle is watching baseball," Matthew observed. Then as he walked forward, she followed him until they got to a spacious drawing room. There they met a gray-haired old man watching baseball on television.

Matthew asked, "Ah, M. I. is batting?"

Veronica who was still quiet and already bored, fixed her gaze on the television screen and stood a few feet away from the old man who seemed to be excited. Matthew went close to the old man and whispered something to him.

She was not habituated to watching baseball. It must be some interesting sport to play, but not better than wrestling. She thought.

The old man who was now standing beside her asked in his baritone voice, "Do you like baseball too?"

She nodded her head, despite being confused whether to say yes or no. All the same, her nodding seemed to gladden the heart of the old man who stated thus: "This girl likes baseball; I will do anything for her." Almost immediately, he extended his hand to her for a handshake and declared, "Hi, my name is Mark."

Mark was in love with flying which he had not been involved in for about two years. As he came out of his house, he moved towards his very large garage, adjacent to the house. There was a 1943 Cessna 700 inside the garage.

Veronica said, "As you have not flown this machine for two years, we should not fly it."

Mark said, "No, it will serve the purpose. We will fit in it."

Mark boarded the flying machine, closely followed by Veronica and Matthew. Mark opened the gate of the garage by clicking a button and then glided the machine out of the garage. It ran across the flying jetty, then took off. Veronica looked anxious as the flying machine gave a jolt.

Matthew asked, "What's the matter?"

Veronica replied, "Will we reach our destination alive?"

Matthew's reaction was to flash a confident smile.
