"How was your appointment with Tom?" Amy asked as she picked up a piece of french fries on the table. Beside it, the plate of lasagna was barely left. There were only two pieces left, along with a few fries. Presumably, it all made for a filling lunch for her, Elle, and the little girl, Chiara. Oh, she took part too, though she had enjoyed her lunch. She barely ate a little just to get rid of the temptation to see them enjoying their meal.
"I canceled it," Elle replied after taking a sip of her chinotto. It was a fizzy drink made from one type of orange and colored in caramel. Some were even darker. It was not as bad as the carbonated drinks sold in fast-food restaurants.
"Why?"
And Elle was stunned. She looked at Amy in disbelief because her best friend was still asking something she clearly knew the answer to. After all, Elle had already said that she couldn't possibly bring Chiara to their meeting. The responsibility of looking after the little girl was hers, not Tom's.
