Beatrix froze, shocked by his outburst. Rhys knew he sounded like a lunatic, but he couldn't help it. He hated that she had to see him like this, unable to control his emotions.
Beatrix's voice trembled as she spoke, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I begged them to stop," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "The man in charge, I begged him to make them stop. But he just looked at me with hate. And the worst part is, he had kids too."
Rhys felt tears stream down his face as he relived the memories, each one more vivid than the last. He felt disgusted with himself for being so vulnerable.
"But they didn't..." he trailed off.
Beatrix felt her heart break as Rhys finally broke down. She watched as he covered his face with his hands, his whole body wracked with sobs. She could feel his pain and agony, and it was almost unbearable to witness.
