The dog brought back memories of him and Annalise could feel herself holding her breath as though waiting for Marco to walk into the room, his mischievous smile on his face as he wished her a happy birthday – he never did.
"Hey," Nicolas said softly, his eyes told her he knew just what she was thinking and Annalise wondered how much pain he could be in. Marco was the one true friend she knew he had left.
"It's okay now, c'mon" His hands stroked her cheek as the dog quieted down content simply lying on her lap cuddled between her and Nicolas.
"I'll leave you both to it now." Mrs. Moreno said and slunk off without giving anyone room to respond to her.
Annalise stared down at the dog, its big, brown eyes looking up at her and she knew she had missed it – missed the life she had as Annalise Moreno.
