There was a distant sound of pounding in the background. It went on repeatedly and all Annalise wanted was for the noise to die down so she could go back to sleep but with the passing seconds, it increased until she could no longer ignore it.
Her eyes came open slowly until she was fully awake to the realization of three things;
There was someone at the door.
She was completely naked.
Nicolás wasn't in the room.
The last one caused her to jolt up and frantically, her eyes moved around the room in search of him but it was easily as though he hadn't been here. She ran to the bathroom and flung the door open, stepping inside to its emptiness - he was gone.
And the heavy knocking on the door remained.
