Chereads / Manaless Mage / Chapter 8 - Quests

Chapter 8 - Quests

He laid down on the cold hard floor of his room as he reminisced about his life up till now.

He observed the interface once more, he then looked at the one thing he still hadn't checked out; quests.

"Quests." He called out. 'Quests? Doesn't that mean missions?' He thought.

'Hmm.. I did all these during my training to be a combat mage…' He said inwardly. Harry wasn't the first person that failed to gain an affinity, although rare, there were still some people who failed to awaken an affinity. Those without affinities could not perform magic as they had no elemental mana.

Those who failed to awaken an affinity had the choice to become a combat mage—although only a few make that choice. Combat mages could also create a mana core and draw mana from the surroundings.

They couldn't perform elemental magic as they had no affinity so they used mana to strengthen and enhance their bodies, giving them enhanced strength and speed.

Unlike Elementalists who had their elements to assist them in drawing mana, combat mages had to go through a special set of training so their body would be able to hold raw mana. If this wasn't done, it could lead to death as their body would be unable to handle the mana.

This training was very strenuous and the difficulty only increased across stages—this was why most people without affinities chose to live as normal human beings rather than become a combat mage.

Harry also tried to walk on the path of a combat mage by performing those special training, but that plan was soiled when it was revealed that he had a broken mana core foundation—he could never be involved in anything related to mana.

Although the thought of his combat mage training brought bad memories, he wasn't really bothered about it—mainly because of the system's presence.

After all, the system gave the quests for a reason… he also needed to level up. The Manaless mage system was the only thing that could help him become stronger.

He couldn't help but be happy that he chose to accept the system—not that he had much of a choice anyway.

'So… system… what would have happened… I had chosen the other option?' He asked the system. The main reason he said 'yes' was because his instincts were screaming at him to do so, he was still curious about what would have really happened if he didn't accept the system… would he have died?

[Nothing Host. The system would have no choice than to forcefully eject itself from the host, causing permanent soul damage to the host.]

'P-permanent… soul… damage?' Harry thought. Although this was the first time he heard about the term 'permanent soul damage', for some reason, he felt it was a very dangerous condition that could lead to his death.

He didn't know much about souls but 'permanent damage' didn't sound any better. 'At least I didn't wait till the timer elapsed…' Harry thought as a chill ran down his spine.

'Except there's one problem here… how do I find an object weighing 200kg. How do I even lift it?!' He exclaimed inwardly.

His parents supported his training when he was younger—back then, they still had hope in him as combat mages were also respected in the society—so getting the necessary equipments for training wasn't too difficult.

However, all those equipments were collected from him when they learnt he couldn't even draw mana, most of it were sold while the remaining were thrown into the trash.

Coupled with his body that had gotten weaker than the average seventeen year old's body over the years, which was mainly due to malnutrition and the poorly treated injuries he got from bullies like Han, there was no way he could lift something of 200kg or easily complete any of the quests.

As he kept thinking about his options, an idea suddenly came into his mind. 'It said lift a total… does that mean I don't have to lift it at once?' He thought.

'Well… let's try that…' He thought. He stood up impatiently and rushed impatiently to the living-room.

He was really happy that no one was at home as there would be no disturbance when he was completing the quest. Since no one was at home, he could boldly come to the living room.

'What… should I lift?' He thought as he looked around the living room, looking for an object that was neither too heavy or too light, one the current him could lift easily. 'The sofa!' He exclaimed inwardly as his gaze stopped at the two-seater sofa in the living room.

He released a heavy breath as he slowly walked to the two seater sofa.

A grunt left his lips as he slowly lifted the two-seat couch.

He had already instructed the system to keep the daily quests open so he could monitor his progress. A smile appeared on his face when he saw his progress.

—Lift a total of 200 kilograms (Status: 32/200kg)

'I was right…' He thought. Although the two-seater was slightly heavier than the three-seat couch as it had a different design and couldn't be dislodged, Harry wasn't bothered by the extra weight. He felt it was the best choice as he would be able to complete the quest faster.

He slowly dropped the sofa and lifted it again. He repeated this action a few more times until the quest was completed.

—Lift a total of 200 kilograms (status: Completed)

Harry dropped to the ground as he panted heavily, completing the quest was more tiring than he expected.

"It's time to complete the next quest…" He muttered. He slowly took off his academy uniform as it was already wet with sweat.

'I should have taken off my uniform before starting the quests… wait… the academy…' His thoughts trailed as he finally remembered something… he still had to attend the academy!

Since he got back from the hospital, he was so carried away with the system and his new skills that he forgot he still needed to get back to the academy. He wasn't sick or anything, after all, the white haired man from the hospital healed all his injuries. So he basically had no reason not to go to the academy.

He glanced at the clock positioned beside the dining, the time was still 7:01am. He left the hospital around 6:30 and spent about thirty minutes exploring the system.

'I still have time… to complete the quests.' Harry said inwardly. A slight smile appeared on his face as he realized this.

The academy started mana lessons(lessons involving mana absorption, spell casting and all practical things involving mana) at 7am and normal lessons(chemistry, maths and the likes) at 9am, the latter was only for normal students(the students that are not involved in anything related to absorbing or using mana).

Harry was one of the 'normal students' so he had almost two hours to complete the quest—This was also the best time for him to complete his quests as no one was at home.

He looked at the daily quests left for him to complete on the system.

Without wasting much time, he rushed back into his room. He opened the small closet at the edge of the room, there were five pieces of clothing in the closet.

Harry took out a red shirt and a pair of brown shorts, although the clothes were obviously worn out with faded colors and threads sticking out from most parts of it, Harry didn't care. As long as it was comfortable enough for what he was about to do.

He took off his school uniform and then replaced it with the red shirt and pair of brown shorts.

He did a few stretches to reduce the pain and numbness he felt in his hands before he finally left the house and started jogging.

—One hour, thirty minutes later

Harry laid on the floor in the living room, his chest heaved heavily as he kept panting.

He completed the quest that required him to run 2km by running at a speed that was neither too fast nor slow.

As for the quest to climb a height of twenty meters, He went to a high hill that was located some meters away from his house and kept on climbing it until the quest was completed.

Now, as he looked at the characters flashing in his eyes, he knew that all his efforts weren't wasted.

[Daily Quest completed]

[Rewards granted: +20 EXP +10 stat points]

[Bonus reward for first daily quest completed: +20 EXP +1 skill point]

A huge grin spread across his face as he saw the rewards and also the bonus rewards given to him.
