Chapter 1 - Surviving Alone

Any way you look at it, what I'm seeing right now is truly magnificent.

Whoever you show this to, they will all think as I do. The sight I saw will always remain in my mind for the rest of my life.

I was watching the stars one evening with my telescope, which I had dreamed of for many years. I have always wondered about space, and I have always asked myself whether there is any living creature other than us behind that endless darkness.

My dad was the person I always dreamed of, he is an Astronaut. A few years ago, he and his teammates were the first humans to go beyond the solar system.

Before my dad went on this mission, he always told me to look at the evening sky with a telescope and kept saying that maybe one day I could see them.

I could never achieve this, almost every evening at this time, I was watching the sky with the telescope I set up in the garden and looking for my father, but I think he has already started his duty.

"Dane, honey can you help me with dinner?" When I heard my mom calling me, I slowly looked away from the telescope and slowly got up from the stool I was sitting on.

"I'll be right back mom." I replied.

"One day I'll be with you too, Dad." I lifted my head towards the endless space home to twinkling stars and stretched out my hands as if I wanted to hold on to a star.

When I got home, I made my way to the kitchen and started helping my mom prepare dinner.

"Mom, when will my father's duty be over?" As I turned on the faucet to clean my hands, I turned to my mother and asked.

At that time, my mother looked into my eyes with a slightly expressionless facial expression, but after realizing it immediately, she approached me with a smile.

"Honey, you know your father has been to the far reaches of space, so only God knows when your mission will be over." My mother put her hand on my shoulder and then, after ruffling my hair, got up again and went to the head of the food and prepared the plates to serve.

"Do we have guests today?" I was surprised to see more than two plates in my mother's hand.

"Your grandparents are visiting us today, so I wanted to make them a plate." Ever since my father left home for duty, everyone including my mom, grandpa and grandma have taken care of me a lot.

My mother graduated from the same space school as my father, but she did not want to continue her job like my father, so she decided to become a housewife.

The table was set for dinner now, and soon after the bell rang, I ran to open the door. When I opened the door, my grandfather and grandmother were standing in front of me. After hugging them both tightly, we went inside together.

As we were about to eat dinner, we turned on the television to watch the evening news, which was my grandfather's usual habit.

I was watching the news with my grandfather while my mother slowly served the food onto the plates.

"God, see boy. How a cat defies a big dog." My grandfather was laughing, tapping the ground lightly with his walking stick.

"Dear spectators, we have to take a short break from the broadcast stream. Since there is important information from ISRC that needs to be explained, it is currently broadcasting all over the world at the same time."

"First of all, I would like to introduce myself, I, Emerson Reynolds, general manager of the International Space Research Center, are here today to give you very important news. As you know, a few years ago in 2077, a select group of humans was sent to reach outside the Solar system."

I started to get excited when I realized that he was talking about my father and my father's friends, and when I immediately turned to face my mother, my mother's eyes almost looked like she was about to cry and she froze in place, locked. She stared at the television.

"The spacecraft Davy Francis, Lance Brooks, Atwater Tyler, Rebecca Cantrell and Bond Walker, codenamed Horizon Falcon, disappeared from our radars a few months ago and were never heard from again. Let's always remember these heroes in a corner of our hearts. Remember, ISRC will never give up on these heroes, and we will continue to work with hope to bring them back to Earth."

After the news of Emerson Reynolds, the broadcast was closed and the regular broadcast began to continue. For a brief moment, the whole house fell silent.

"We are faced with a really sad news, it is really sad that the talented and intelligent people who have devoted their years to this work suddenly disappear. We send our endless wishes to their families and let's continue with the next news.

~12 Hours Ago - Midnight - Time: 04:00~

Helen Tyler's POV:

"What nonsense are you talking about? Announcing this to the whole world... Do you know how big of a nonsense this is?"

Even though I didn't know who the person on the other side of the phone was, I understood from the very beginning why they were calling me.

"I understand what you mean ma'am, but it would be much better if everyone knew this."

I wiped my eyes with my wrists to keep the tears from dripping from my eyes.

"Listen to me carefully, if you announce this incident to all humanity, I will sue both you and your company."

"Ma'am, we know you're in a really bad situation, but all humanity must learn about the sacrifices these heroes have made."

"You goddamn bastards...!"

I accidentally couldn't control my voice and shouted very loudly, I hope Dane didn't wake up.

"My husband and his friends died because of you bastards, and you don't even deserve to call them heroes." This time, I kept my voice under control and spoke a little loudly.

"Ma'am please listen to us for once-"

I can't take what this man has said any longer, and immediately after I hung up, I sat on the corner of the bed and began to cry.

I was aware from the very beginning that this mission would result in failure, but I couldn't help it.

"It's all because of me..."

Now all people will learn of the failure of this mission and the ISRC will tell a ton of lies to protect its own reputation.

"Damn... Damn... Why is all this happening?"
