Some lore if you're interested:

The land of Annwn is utterly broken. The ruins of once-great kingdoms are common, and their legends are long forgotten.

The majority of the continent is uninhabited or uninhabitable, but in the scant regions where hope still reins, many people reside.

There are four major kingdoms and more independent city-states than one can count. The Four Kingdoms are ruled by their own monarchs, as well as an Emperor. The four kingdoms all share borders in one way or another, the city-states either too strong to be captured or unimportant.

The strongest kingdom typically holds the seat of the Emperor, and the Krodians have held it for centuries.

The Upheaval pertains to the Emperor and monarchs of each Kingdom. The Kingdom of Vrea and the Krodian Empire are two of the four major kingdoms. Redvale is one of the aforementioned city-states.

Although I say the four major kingdoms, the Kingdom of Vrea has been on the brink of destruction for years. It was the weakest of the powers in terms of military and economic power, mostly due to a lack of population as well as geographic circumstances that made farming nearly impossible.

The Vrean Sun Guard were feared, much like the Spartans. The Vreans had a standard military, which often contained Sun Guard units. This is just to say that when I mention the Kingdom of Vrea, I mean the Kingdom of Vrea as it was before the Upheaval, and before the Battle of Three Kingdoms,

The four major kingdoms, in terms of power, are:

1. The Krodian Empire

2. The Qutary Kingdom

3. The Adal Sultanate

4. The Kingdom of Vrea

Each kingdom has its patron god. You'll learn more about each of these powers throughout the book.

The Upheaval is an important event approximately three years before the beginning of the book that sent the Four Kingdoms into a state of total war. In short, the Emperor and Kings of the Four Kingdoms were murdered in the span of a week. Each power blamed another and declared war soon after.

Of course, not all of the powers were truly ready for war, like the Vreans. Unfortunately, the remaining Vrean politicians were fools and condemned their nation to death.

The cause of the Upheaval is unknown, but in the coming days up to the murder week, there were reports of the very air shaking, and of strange noises deep in the mountains. Such reports have long been dismissed, but never stopped.
