SCREEEEE
BANG
My head whips forward as the world goes in slow motion. I catch a glimpse of my father, the steering wheel impaled in his forehead. I hear my mother scream, my eyes shoot over, a large shard of glass juts from her eye. Her banshee-like screams of pure pain filling my ears. The world goes black.
"Benjamin! I know we haven't seen you since you were a baby and all but we're your godparents!" They had smiles on their faces. Mocking me. I grabbed my bag full of trinkets and belongings. I took one last glance at my old childhood room. Pale blue walls with train tracks and a train painted on, shelves scattered along the walls where my books and toys used to sit, and my bed where Mr. Bear used to sit.
I follow them into their car. They chatter on trying to talk to me, trying to act like they're my parents. I look out the window to distract myself, houses and farmland burring together. I hate cars, I hate them so much. I squeeze my eyes shut hoping for sleep. It never came.
We arrived at a house, it was in the next town over and in a different school district area. The house looked like a relatively nice suburban house, like one you'd see in a movie "C'mon Ben let's head inside. I'll show you to your room." I open the door and step out, they lead me inside and give me a small tour. Kitchen, bathroom, Living room, etc. After the long boring walk throughout the house they lead me to the room I'll be staying in.
It's not my room though.
It never will be.
They tell me to make myself at home and stroll away. I toss my bag into a corner and look around. I open the closet, it already has clothes stocked up and a chest to store other things. Tsk tsk tsk. Benny these clothes don't fit your style at all! "Mom?" I ask looking around. To my right the figure of my mother looks disapproving of the wardrobe, her delicate face screwed up. My father lays his hand on her shoulder Oh don't worry too much dear he won't be here long. "Dad!" my face lights up. I hug them but my arms just phase through my parents Oh honey we're dead. My mother giggles. It's your fault you know. My father adds on.
Memories rush back to me.
"Hey, mom…I forgot Mr. Bear at the nursing home." she sighs "Greg, turn back. You know Ben can't sleep without that damn teddy bear." my dad comes to a stop in the middle of a crossroad. My father makes a U-turn and a pickup speeds right into our SUV
Oh.
I did this.
It's all my fault, isn't it. If I hadn't forgotten Mr. Bear none of this would've happened. I press the heels of my palms to my eyes till black dots fill my vision. I look around again. My parents are gone.
End chapter?
I'm on my bed, my eyes are wide open. I won't close my eyes. I can't close my eyes, whenever I do all I can see is my mother's face contorted into pure pain or my father's lifeless face. I hear my door click open "Hey hun. It's late, try to get some sleep, you have school tomorrow. I'll leave some pills and a cup of water on your bedside table, okay?" One of them turns around and leaves and I roll over and pop the two pills into my mouth and wash them down with a sip of water.
I cling to Mr. Bear and immediately pass out from a mixture of mental exhaustion and the medication.
'"Hey kid are you okay?" a man asks me. I try to mutter something out but it's just too much. I'm hot and cold and waves of pain are shooting all over along with your nice dose of throbbing to go with it. I passed out again.'
I wake up tears streaming down my face 'Oh don't cry Benny!'
