Chapter 46 - professional slackers

°°°sergeant Vex of the imperial Serothor force pov

Yesterday I watched the Serothor army train a few laps around the walls that even a little girl seemed to have no issues with.

it was a pathetic show of force infact it was a useless one! what use does training soldiers in such a back water city like this actually do?

I requested a quiet posting with minimal combat and I received it in the worst way I was thinking a place near the capital with cheap liquor and pretty women.

What I got is to be sent to the middle of nowhere to a country the size of a small town where alcohol cost buckets and the women have a murderous look In their eyes.

But at least I get to slack off everyday hahahaha.•••back to normal

According to kyle the imperial troops don't train, drink all day and annoy the pretty people in Serothor which is to be expected the culture in the empire's army is... lacking to say the least.

Oz says he is almost done formulating a plan about how to perfect the summoning ritual into a viable teleportation spell but he still needs more time.

Clair's lessons have been going smoothly she should be the one called a monster granted she is still young so when she gets older and stronger she will probably be unstoppable.

The volunteers for the next battle and the main army train twice a week now while the reserves train fortnightly and now I plan to make the imperial forces train once a week.

But right now I'm a bit... preoccupied...

*Slam!*

My mother queen Corae slammed down a bunch of papers on the table infront of me apparently me and my brother are both 'shrugging off our duties' by not getting married and making an heir.

Honestly I'm a bit young for her to be this adamant about it so I can only imagine what my older brother is going through then my mother spoke.

"I don't know why it's so complicated you and your brother both act as if it is the worst thing in the world! serothor has no aristocracy you can literally marry anyone!"

Ugh how can I get out of this?... of course! I looked out the window and gasped before speaking.

"Omgs is that the time?! I have to go meet with the imperial forces!"

I ran out the door while queen Corae looked flabbergasted but ultimately resigned I wasn't fully lying I really am going to go see the imperial forces I just exaggerated the importance of the issue.

I walked through the city there is no need to rush and it isn't uncommon for me to just walk around in doing so I noticed just how advanced Serothor is compared to other cities.

Our drainage systems were efficient and well maintained, the roads were cleaned regularly at least once a day by government paid cleaners and the houses all had proper indoor plumbing that worked with a mechanical water system.

Honestly I am actually a little curious about who designed everything... a few minutes of walking passed and I reached the gate then had it opened for me.

I began walking towards their camp a field of off white and brown tents and as I entered I felt many eyes land on me but oddly enough no one came to meet me instead I was hit by a foul stench.

The smell was abhorrent I don't expect a perfect level of cleanliness from an army but this was unacceptable the smell of body odor, strong liquor, urine and gods know what else all mixed together.

To hell with training them if it is this bad I might have to burn down the camp to avoid a fucking plague of something horrible like a cholera outbreak.

Five minutes passed but still no one came to greet me it is not right for an army to be this slack in greeting a visitor and at the very least someone should have come say hi even if they weren't ordered to.

That probably meant that rather than every soldier instead there was incompetent leadership and that mixed with a majority of young impressionable young men creating a horrible environment of laziness.

I am done with waiting so I called out.

"I am second prince Zeth of Serothor and if someone doesn't take me to your sergeant I will have people's heads"

The army my not respect my orders but they will probably listen to a royal's threats and even though I don't look like the empire's nobles at least a few of them would recognize me.

In less than a minute a young scrawny boy who looked a little younger than me was infront of me he is probably the least respected person in the vicinity so they are throwing him into the fray.

He looked nervous and kept his head looking at the ground then spoke.

"welcome your highness I am Cedar a lay soldier of the imperial forces if you would follow me I will guide you to the sergeant"

As he spoke I noticed bruises around his neck and wrists just barely obscured by his uniform a lay soldier was like an errand boy or apprentice soldier depending on how they are treated.

It seems like he is going through a particularly bad hazing a practice which I will need to stomp out of these soldiers I replied to Cedar.

"Of course lead the way oh! and please keep your head up and look me in the eyes when talking"

He looked surprised but looked up and spoke.

"Yes your highness "

His black eyes dull with despair only comparable to the mess his black hair was his pale skin weathered down far more than what suits his age.

I'm gonna have to have a few strong 'words' with this sergeant and turn these slackers into people worthy of protecting Serothor.
