Ryuk was a shinigami plain and simple. His job was to write the names of humans in his death note. Forced to stay in the shinigami realm Ryuk's once exciting job became boring. Deciding enough was enough, Ryuk dropped a death note and changed his destiny forever.

Light Yagami was the one to pick up the death note. Ryuk didn't have many opinions on Light yet believed he would make things very interesting because of his strong sense of justice. The true apple of Ryuk's eye was coincidentally an apple.

It was simply love at first sight. In the shinigami world fruits were not a thing, in fact very little existed there. Ryuk's love for apples grew more and more with each bite he took.

Light was no longer able to support Ryuk's addiction. If he continued to buy even more apples L would be suspicious of him and he would slowly use up all his funds. So it was in Ryuk's hands. He needed apples.

At first he would go to grocery stores and farmers markets and steal apples when no one was watching. However his greed grew. Even that was not enough. He stole apples without a care as to who saw him. Of course his actions made their way onto the news.

Kira's mysterious killings and the increasing cases involving supernatural floating apples caused mass panic. Many people believed the end was near and this was God's warning.

Light was not pleased by Ryuks shenanigans as they were beginning to become a hindrance to his battle with L. However knowing he was powerless before Ryuk he refused to say anything.

With no one opposing him, Ryuk's love spiraled out of control. He wanted all the apples in the world! All to himself. His plan was simple yet effective. He started by writing the names of humans who ate an apple into his death note.

Before long, people began to connect the dots and stopped selling and consuming apples, banning them completely. Continuing his plan, he wrote the names of all the people who owned factories producing apples.

With the apple business completely failing and no one willing to step up, the factories were closed down shutting off access to apples for good. Although Ryuk was extremely satisfied, Light was not. Ryuk's actions had made L extremely suspicious and he was very close to catching Light.

His anger bubbling, Light said many horrible things about apples even going as far as forbidding Ryuk from eating them. In that moment, Ryuk realised what he must do.

Every single person on Earth was an obstacle between him and his one true love apples. The only way to truly be safe and happy with apples, Ryuk would need to wipe out humanity. And he did.

Ryuk's love for apples was the cause of the mass extinction of humans. Whether it was justified or not may never be know. However, as Ryuk sat upon his throne of apples watching over the countless apple trees surrounding him, one thing was for sure, Ryuk loved apples.
