"Is my father...?" Runa left her question unresolved. She looked up from the diary and stared at Roderick. He must have known what Runa was about to ask.
Rodrick nodded. There was a sense of heaviness in his movements and gaze. "Yes. Your father made a pact with a demon. Ah no—" Roderick corrected his words. "He made a pact with the devil. And the condition that the devil asked for was… his descendants."
"Me." Runa touched her chest as she said that. Somehow, she felt empty at that moment. Her father was willing to surrender himself to the devil just so he could gain wealth. Runa did not expect her father to be such a shallow person.
"You must think that your father is a short-minded person," Roderick said as if he could read Runa's mind.
Runa swallowed. "Isn't that so?"
Roderick's eyes dimmed, then he lowered his head. "No," he replied. "He is a smart person, Runa. He read all those books and found something no one had ever done before."
