Chapter 6 - First Quest

(Extra chapter, a short one, but extra nonetheless. Wanted to get some more in before I slept. Enjoy!)

Galen groaned in frustration. "WHAT THE FUCK ARE IN THESE BOXES?!"

I sighed. Galen didn't know how to do anything other than bitch about everything. It was getting on my nerves a little bit but I could see that underneath, he was a nice guy. Despite complaining, he didn't slack at all.

However, his question was completely valid. I started to wonder about what was in this absurdly heavy box I was holding. It was approximately 2 feet cubed. As I was thinking about it, something surprised me.

[Heavy Box]

[Belonging to Corsoll, this box is one of many that are filled with food and drink.]

My eyes lit up, the inner gamer that had been suppressed for so long revealing itself. "Galen! Focus on the box. Like think about it."

He looked at me cockeyed but did what I said nonetheless. Almost immediately, his expression changed to shock. "Well… that's pretty cool. I wonder what else we could do this for?"

I shrugged, deciding to look around at random objects. I discovered a few things. Firstly, there was a distinct vagueness to the information that was provided. At one point, we opened one of the boxes and found that it contained flour. Upon inspecting it again, the name of the item changed to Box of Flour.

Another thing I found was that only objects within an arm's reach could be inspected. This was understandable as it forced exploration and careful observation of your surroundings. We were able to inspect various items such as bottles of liquor, vegetables, and cutlery. When we tried inspecting things like chairs or tables, we found that nothing came up. I suggested that it might be limited to objects that are either related to quests or can be picked up by the average person.

With the amount of realism in the game, the inspect ability was unexpected. However, it makes complete sense. For starters, it has to be willfully activated. On top of that, there are countless foreign objects that players have never seen before. It'd be nice to not have to look like an idiot when you ask someone what a vegetable is.

Speaking of realism, Galen and I were very happy that we were currently in a restaurant. While we worked, we got thirsty and also had to use the bathroom. If we weren't in a restaurant, a bathroom and water wouldn't have been so easily accessible.

Just like Corsoll said, he returned within the hour. He found us sitting in a booth near the bathroom, enjoying a glass of water. "Well shit, I haven't seen this place look so clean in weeks. Maybe I'll get some better tips tonight."

Galen and I turned towards Corsoll. Being the diplomat in the duo, I spoke. "We hope you don't mind, we were thirsty."

Corsoll waved his hand dismissively. "No worries. Are the two of you hungry?"

In unison, both of our stomachs rumbled. Quite loudly at that.

Corsoll laughed. "I'll heat up some leftovers for you two. Hang tight." He walked behind the bar and into the kitchen.

A few minutes later, he emerged from the kitchen carrying two plates. On the plates were meat that resembled chicken and some potatoes. "I cooked up some lizard meat for myself last night. I'm not too good a cook but it should fill you right up."

*Clink*

He set the plates down on the table. "Eat up!"

We both nodded and I spoke again. "Thank you for the food."

Corsoll laughed again. "Oh, it's nothing. Glad to have some new friendly faces to look for down here."

I grabbed the fork and knife that was on the table, digging into the lizard meat. It was actually quite flavorful. If I had to equate it to something from the real world, it would be alligator meat. The potatoes were also nice and crispy.

Once we finished eating, Corsoll emerged from the kitchen again. "Take out your communicators. I'll let you two know if I need more work done."

I tilted my head. "Communicator?"

Corsoll let go what sounded like a cough. "Do you not have one?"

I shook my head. "I don't think either of us do."

He nodded. "Alright. I have a few spares in the back. Every once in a while, someone will get too drunk and forget one here. I can sell it to you for 50 credits. They're 200 credits normally."

I smiled. "That would be great. Do you have two?"

He turned, heading back into the kitchen. "I do. I'll be right back out."

Within a minute, he returned with two devices that looked like smartphones. He held out his hand once he reached us, appearing to be asking for the credits he was due.

Fortunately, another thing we had done while completing the quest was figure out how the currency inventory works. Similar to the inspect ability, we just had to will an amount of credits to come out. If we tried to take out more than we had, it would just take out everything we had.

Each of us took out 50 credits, handing them over to Corsoll. The communicator was too important. I doubt anyone would hesitate to spend the 200 credit retail price.

Corsoll then handed the comms to us. "Just tap the screen to turn it on." He then took out his own comm, showing us. "Then, you just tap the top of yours to someone elses and their contact will be added. Put your name in and we can add each other."

I nodded, typing my name into the comm. I then tapped the top of my comm to his, chuckling internally that I was touching tips with an alien.

Corsoll nodded, doing the same with Galen. "Ah, Galen and Soryn. I guess I didn't ever get your names. Well, I got some prep to do before opening tonight. Can you two see yourselves out?"

I nodded, getting up from the table. "Again, thank you for the food."

Corsolla chuckled. "And thank you for the help. We'll be in touch."
