Chapter 15 - Call me mother

Chapter 15

"your highness", Theodore addressed her with a slight bow. She frowned.

"I am your mother, don't call me your highness".

She looked angry and Theodore feared that she would become violent. He looked around if there was any guard around that he could alert. But there was none in sight.

"call me mother", she ordered. "yes mother", he obeyed her to avoid any trouble. He desperately wished that Fife would come back soon.

"why haven't you come to see me, it has been a long time since I have set my eyes on you", she started to sob.

Theodore panicked as she started sobbing, he tried consoling her but she cried more, he just wished she would stop crying. He didn't want anyone to walk in on them and have the wrong impression about what was going on.

"please stop crying", he begged, he didn't even know if she could hear him as she kept crying

This was the scene Fife came back to see. He was shocked, he stood still, snacks in his hands and his mouth wide open in shock.

"what's going on here?", Theodore looked up at the sound of his voice. "thank goodness you are here Fife I don't know what is wrong with her, she just started crying. I have been trying to console her but I don't think it's working". Theodore explained to him.

"just wait here, I will be back. Let me get the guards, Fife said, he dropped the snacks on the bench and dashed off. Soon he returned to the garden with the guards. They apologized to Theodore and took her away. She cried more loudly as she was taken away. As she cried, Theodore felt a faint pain on his chest, he rubbed his chest as he wondered what was going on.

"are you okay?", Fife asked him. "I am fine", he replied.

Fife handed him the snacks, "thanks", he said as he took it. They both ate in silence.

"do you know what happened to the princess?", Theodore asked Fife. "I only know a little, back then when the princess was around our age, she was a avid reader of books just like you. She was responsible for the establishment of the library, she used to travel to far away lands to get books. She went on one of such trips. and she came back different, she was depressed and melancholic. The king tried to find out what was wrong with her, but she refused to talk. Eventually she started behaving weird and it gradually escalated to her condition now".

"that is so sad, there isn't a cure?", Theodore asked sympathetically. Fife shook his head, "over the years, the king has called different doctors but none of them could find a cure".

"I feel so sad for her, because I know how it feels to have a condition which seems to have no cure".

Fife looked at him sympathetically, he knew Theodore must be thinking about his birthmark and limp. He cleared his throat before talking.

"You shouldn't feel too sad about your condition Theo, you are much more than your condition".

Theodore looked down. "at times it's hard for me to believe that. All people see when they look at me is that boy who has that terrible birthmark and can't walk properly. There was a time people said I was cursed by God", he laughed humourlessly.

"I am so sorry you went through all of that Theo. I never knew it was that bad, I didn't grow up here so when I came here, I just assumed you didn't like interacting with people", Fife said with a contrite look on his face.

"I am not mad at you Fife, in the short time we have known each other, you have been a wonderful friend to me and I am very grateful for that", Fife took Theodore's hands in his.

"and I promise to be an excellent friend, if anyone tries to bully you just report to me. I will handle it".

Theodore laughed at Fife's words, "and how are you going to do that? You are afraid of Betty, your own fiancée".

Fife shuddered at the mention of Betty's name. "trust me Theodore, if you had a fiancée like Betty you would be afraid too".

"what's so scary about her. She seems like a nice gentle young lady to me".

"that is just her outer appearance Theodore. In reality, she is quite horrid. She talks too loudly, she laughs too loudly too. And she sees me as this fairytale prince who is going to sweep her off her feet. But I am not that person Theodore and if I am being completely honest, marriage scares me".

Theodore looked at him curiously, "why are you scared of marriage?", he asked.

"my parents had a horrible marriage, my father was a monster, he would hit her and yell at her. That was why she left with me. It was when he died that we came back, I am scared, what if I became a monster to Betty. What if I can't control my anger and and I hurt her".

Theodore looked at him sympathetically, he used to think that he was the only one with problems, but now he has realized that other people had their own problems too.

"Fife, you are nothing like your father, you are the sweetest person I know. I don't think you would ever intentionally hurt her".

"thanks Theodore",

"You are welcome now eat up so we can go back to the library". Fife groaned while Theodore burst into laughter.
