At first, Smith was in denial over what he heard but the look of shock on Tessy's face when he stepped into the room, unveiled a lot of things afterwards. He had played a fast one on her, pretending to have heard all of her conversation. Smith initially had thought she was cheating on him but it was even worse than that. He had been played by Tessy and her cohort from onset. Her relationship with him was part of an acted script. Tessy thought he heard all of her conversation on phone that day.
She suddenly became afraid, trying to create some distance between them. Smith had made to hold her but in her fear, she had staggered, dropping a file in her hand, exposing its content.
"Oh! No!" Tessy had lamented, scampering about to gather the contents before Smith could see them.
It was too late though as one of the documents caught Smith's attention. He had searched his whole apartment looking for it. The document was useless, he had kept it only because it was symbolic. The only piece that reminds him of his father's legitimate earnings before he suddenly turned a fraudster.
Why would Tessy keep it in her possession? Why pretend she didn't know its whereabouts?
This was yet, another revelation. Smith realized he didn't know Tessy at all.
That same day, Tessy left with few of her things but in her haste, she left a flash drive behind. All efforts to reach her was futile. She had created a huge vacuum in Smith that could not be filled. For two weeks, he was incommunicado. He had however known Tessy did not reach out either because she alone had access to the only line he kept on.
Smith would sit every night amidst Tessy's belongings, trying to recapture the sweet memories they had together, sniffing her clothes, looking at pictures.
Some other times, he would drink himself to stupor, making a mess of the whole place. He had done exactly same one evening, a week after Tessy's deceit was uncovered. He was in a fit of rage. He had too much to drink. He began throwing Tessy's things around the place, moving about like wildfire. He felt something crack under his feet. In his drunk state, he couldn't make out what it was. He stepped away from it, crashing on the sofa when he became exhausted.
In the morning, when he was sober, he observed that he had almost crushed a flash drive. He went through the files on the drive, using his laptop. What he saw was just too much to bear.
There were series of videos stored on the flash. Few of which showed a guy issuing instructions to Tessy. Another video proved beyond doubt that Tessy was a trained terrorist. He went through the rest of the files until he came to one that explicitly captured the sexual moment spent between Tessy and the same guy that occasionally gave her instructions on what to do.
By then, Smith was blinded by rage. He felt like bringing the whole mansion down with his bear hands. He felt he was the biggest fool. He was the pawn in their game and he had even aided the success of it all. He stormed out of his apartment with his car key in hand. He waved John aside as he entered his audi and drove away. He drove for a while before parking on a street, miles away from the city. He didn't realize he had gone far but he could remember his location. Tessy had brought him there once. She told him in tears how she lost her family on those soil.
Smith had felt her anguish. He had promised her he would make a good memory out of the place for her. Smith stepped out of his car, secured the lock, before taking a stroll. He came to a building that looked quite familiar but he didn't remember ever seeing it. He thought of going in to have a look, but then, he saw a car approaching. He quickly retraced his step, hiding beside the building. The car stopped in front of the old house where Smith had been standing only a moment ago. Out, came Tessy and her lover. They both did a quick sweep of the place with their eyes before heading inside.
Smith felt he just won a jackpot. That was the last place Smith would have imagined running into Tessy. She had told him how the place made her skin crawl because it held only bad memories for her. Smith decided he would get to the bottom of it all that day. He stepped lightly around the house, to a window. He could hear faint voices. He took a peak in through the window. He noticed there were two other guys with Tessy and her lover. They were speaking aloud.
"Boss is not happy with you. How can you be so careless, ruining years of our hardwork in just a single day!" One of the two guys said to Tessy.
"Damn it! To think we were that close', the second guy buttressed
"I will have none of this!" Tessy's lover said in her defense.
He was livid with anger. Tessy bowed her head, feeling dejected.
"Anyway, let's get to work", the second guy said.
Tessy began parking some substances. Smith squinted his eyes through the open window to have a clear view of what it was. It was that moment Tessy's lover chose to raise his head up, his gaze landing on the window, making eye contact with Smith.
Smith froze in his stead.
"What are you looking at Phil?" Tessy asked her lover.
"I think there's someone spying on us" Phil said, take a step towards the Window.
Smith quickly lowered his head but that only confirmed Phil's speculation. He made his way to the window in stride. Smith was rounding the corner of the house by the time Phil got to the window but unfortunately he hit his leg on an iron pail lying carelessly around the house. Phil and the rest heard the sound. The other two guys immediately made for the door, drawing out their guns. Phil went through the back with Tessy, following the path Smith had taken.
Tessy recognized Smith immediately he saw his retreating figure. She knew for certain, that he was the spy. She immediately told Phil about it. Phil wasted no time to sprang to action as he released some shots after Smith. Smith kept running fast, as he tried his best to dodge the bullets fired at him.
Just then, a tattered looking woman appeared from no where with a baby in hand. Smith shouted at her to get back but before she could take two steps back, Phil had fired more shots, two of which hit the woman on the chest. She fell on the floor, groaning in pain, even as she tried to use her body to shield her baby. Smith had hid behind a barrel, looking at Sophie as she struggled with her breathe.
"Fuck! You hit the woman! Fuck!" Tessy cried out
"Shit! Let's get out of here!" Phil said, as they both ran away.
Smith quickly ran to Sophie to help her but she had lost so much blood. She was fading away. Before she draw her last breathe, she had entrusted a three month old Ella to his care, told him both her name and her daughter's before giving up the ghost.
