The premise of this sentence is actually that the "environment" shapes and transforms life... Life that cannot adapt to the environment should theoretically die off, and if it survives, it often has undergone changes.
In the Life system, the two broad categories, Gardeners and Beast Tamers/Healers, are essentially the distinctions between "environment" and "individual."
In a sense, Gardeners are much crueler than Beast Tamers...
