Tree-men are actually an ability that high-level Gardeners are very fond of using.
They transform plants into "mobile Tree-men", granting them the characteristics of both half-plant and half-animal for a short period of time.
The reason it's short-term is that this forceful change of life form often has many flaws... It neither has the digestive system of an animal nor can it root itself in the earth as before, rendering its survival difficult.
Of course, since the ability exists, naturally there are Tree-men in nature, and Big Boss Gardeners do have methods of truly transforming trees into living Tree-men to serve as their own guards...
