Those sacrifices were the beasts from the Beast Taming Garden in the courtyard.
Mostly products of the Exotic Realm, but many had already completed hybridization with the local species...... They were ultimately eliminated, to avoid contaminating the gene pool of the ethnic group, they were placed into the storehouse for those culled.
But now, as Otherworldly species, as flavors the Abyss had never tried, as "pure beings" unimaginably low in contamination, they were indeed the most suitable sacrifices.
As for whether the sacrifices were human, whether they possessed intelligence? To the Abyss, it made no difference.
No need to slaughter, nor to be placed upon altars, the world took away its Gift.

The wolf pack on the altars mutated amidst screams, meeting their respective ends on their own levels.
