The human-height corridor space is slightly oppressive, but combined with the wooden panels used to modify the floors and walls, it becomes a super fire hazard... In some worlds and some eras, many disaster-level fires were caused by such self-modified buildings.
Before the disaster, the mall landlord only hoped for more rent, and the tenant merchants only wanted more foot traffic, wishing that every customer passing by their store would be forcibly slowed down... But after the disaster, this became a death maze where people didn't know which direction to run during an escape.
