I inserted the key into the keyhole and twisted it. I was home at last and all I wanted to do was take a shower and lay in bed. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Flashes of Ben ran through my head like a merry-go-round. As I opened the door poppyseed rushed to me. Her cute face and little brown fur were enough to relax my mind. I've had Poppyseed ever since I moved out of my parent's house. She has been a loyal companion to me ever since then.
It was tough at first to find a reliable home for her and me. Most apartments didn't accept big dog breeds like her, and I couldn't blame them. She was a big dog, but there was nothing scary about her breed. I hugged Poppyseed with big open arms and finished walking into the apartment. I took my coat off and hung it on the coat rack beside the door."Hey Poppy," I said in a shrill excited voice. " How's my baby been doing all day?" Poppyseed barked in excitement as she jumped and twirled around. I walked into the kitchen and flung my keys into a marble bowl in the middle of the kitchen island. " You hungry poppy?" poppyseed barked in agreement. I opened up the fridge and fished out a can of dog food. I checked the date on the back just in case it was expired. Lucky me it wasn't. I went to the cabinet and took out poppyseed's favorite plate. It had dogs of all kinds on it. Words were scribbled all over it as well. 'Doggy playtime' it read. I honestly, didn't know why poppyseed loved this plate so much. Maybe it was the dogs on the plate or just the plate in general. Poppyseed barked in an excited tone and jumped all around.
I placed the plate on the ground in front of her and opened up the can of dog food. The moment the dog food hit the plate poppyseed went straight in, devouring it immediately. I chuckled, " Slow down Poppy, there's always more." I reassured her. Poppyseed looked up at me and bark in acceptance. I laughed.
" You're finally home." a judging voice said from behind me. I jumped up and quickly turned over my shoulder. My mom leaned against the kitchen entrance. Her arms were folded and her small oval-shaped glasses hung halfway off her nose. Her hair wasn't as neat as it always had been. Normally her hair would be wisped into curls and well-trimmed. Her clothes were wrinkly and pale. I sighed, " Did you have a fight with dad again?" I asked. My mom can up off the side of the wall and walked toward the island counter. She sighed and rested her waist against the counter.
I leaned back down and picked up the can of dog food. "You know mom you should just tell him." I insisted. My mom and dad never really got along. They'd bicker and argue, but never in front of me at least. I respected them for that. " You know your father can be stubborn he's a military man," she said softly. I never understood that. Yes, he was in the military but that doesn't mean that he can't listen. "Mom, you'll have to talk." I stood up and walked to the trash can and threw the can into the trash.
"But, it'll hurt him Levia." My mom uncrossed her arms and sighed deeply. " Maybe, your right." she finally said. I walked over to her and grabbed both of her hands, holding them gently. " Mom, if I can come to terms with you wanting to divorce dad, I'm sure dad can too," I said with kind eyes. "Thank you Levia."
I let go of her hands and walked into the living room. Poppyseed barked and quickly ran after me. My mom wasn't one step too far behind me before she said something. "You know I never understood why you got that Bullmastiff." she scorned. I ignored her and sat down in the middle of the couch. Poppyseed jumped onto the couch and curled up right beside me. I pulled out my phone and began replying to the text messages from this morning. " Mom, is there another reason you're here besides the fact that you want to bite at my dog and worry about dad?" I replied.
" As a matter of fact, I bought you some clothes and some food," she said proudly. I glanced up from my phone and then back down at it. "Fine, if you don't want to interact with your mother anymore just say that Levia," she said sternly with anger. She walked over and picked up her keys and purse that was sitting on the coffee table. "See you later baby," she said. "Bye Mom" I replied. The door shut behind her. I let out a long-awaited sigh and turned my phone off. Today was beginning to be the longest day. I stood up from the couch and walked toward my room. The hallway to it seemed longer than usual. It annoyed me. When I made it to the room I quickly turned on the shower, got undressed, and hopped in. The water fell down my body with warmth and I could feel myself falling asleep.
After, about 12 minutes in the shower I got out finally and made my way to bed. The smooth satin sheets grazed my skin as I made myself comfortable and fell asleep.
