Lin Hao was but a simple man, living in a generic apartment in Shanghai. The busy noises of people on the way to their day jobs echoed out to him, as he stared out his window.
He was looking out onto the street, a jealousy lingering in his chest for everyone out there.
"Why is my life like this? Why am I not happy like them?"
Lin Hao never had the best of luck, from failing out of his classes to recently getting fired from his job.
It was as if the heavens themselves conspired to ruin the young man's life. Only two weeks had passed since his firing, a punishment for his "good" behavior.
Lin Hao had stood up to his manager at work, who was sexually harassing one of the female employees at the convenience store he part timed at.
On paper, he thought that he would be rewarded for his actions.
That this thuggish bastard would get what he deserves most.
But instead, Lin Hao ended up fired and his manager got away with it thanks to his connections.
He'd never forget the smug, devil like look his manager gave him during his "termination." The self satisfied grin on his face as Lin Hao was doomed to going broke, this job having been his one little hope of going up a financial bracket with enough time.
To rub salt in the wound, the manager had pulled some extra strings and gotten Lin Hao blacklisted from all the other convenience stores in the neighborhood.
On the surface, that bastard of a manager was a normal man.
However, his father was quite the wealthy and well connected business man. Nobody would dare to provoke or insult him, or risk all sorts of "incidents" conveniently tearing apart their livelihood.
Lin Hao banged his fist against the wall remembering it all, this world was unfair.
Money and power alone meant those who were evil could get away with anything.
Lin Hao resigned himself. He took a deep breath, and moved over to his computer to check on the status of his job applications.
Sadly, the sight was anything but reassuring.
Lin Hao's applications had all been rejected, even ones aimed at outside of the neighborhood he was in.
It didn't matter if it was ten minutes or three hours of a commute, Lin Hao was just that desperate for some form of income now.
His apartment rent was looming around the corner, and without any more money...
He wouldn't last another month.
His options were running out, when a phone call came to him in his worst hour.
He gulped upon seeing the name, Fu Mei. Fu Mei had been his loyal girlfriend for the last three years, supporting Lin Hao through his troubles and never leaving his side.
But how long would she be able to stand this?
Lin Hao felt a guilt inside of him for being so pathetic, he needed to change not just for himself but for her as well. He picked up the call, "Hey Fu Mei!"
Lin Hao tried his best to sound positive, like he had come across a lucky break or relief. But Fu Mei's next words shook him. "Lin Hao...I can't do this anymore with you."
"Fu Mei!? What are you saying?" Lin Hao gasped, "Fu Mei, I've been applying everywhere. Please, believe in me!"
Lin Hao grasped his phone tightly, a determined look on his face.
"Lin Hao.. How long do I have to wait like this? You just have one problem after another and you never change!"
Lin Hao's anger grew, but not at her.
She had been by his side through everything, but Lin Hao had only bit her hand at every turn. From slacking off at times, to failing out of his classes and having lost his main job to act like a "hero".
Fu Mei was burdened herself, with long hours and having to take care of her aging mother at the same time.
Staying by his side had been tough all these years, watching those around her land successful careers and live well off lives.
While she was "stuck" with Lin Hao. She had loved him, the two emotionally supporting each other throughout their relationship. Lin Hao had been everything, just not successful.
But Love didn't solve everything.
Love didn't make up for the long days she had to work, love didn't make up for the lack of money both her and her family had.
Love most certainly could not fill the void in both of their bank accounts.
"I want to be with you Lin Hao, but it's like you don't even try sometimes." She began to sob, before quickly hanging up the phone on him.
"Fu Mei? Fu Mei!"
Lin Hao screamed in his apartment room, clutching his face in frustration. "Damn! How can I be so shameless of a man, I tested her so much and...Now she really wants me out!"
He couldn't allow himself to fall into a slump, he had to prove himself better.
If he could clean his life and money up, Fu Mei would surely see he was earnest in heart for her.
Lin Hao sat down at his computer, prepared to apply to even the risky and hazardous jobs that would take anyone.
"If I can't even do this! Then I will never be able to live with myself!"
Several hours later, Lin Hao had achieved an astounding 100 applications sent out.
He felt a sense of pride in his accomplishment, having gone as far as he could out of comfort. It didn't matter how dirty the job was, as long as he could use a starting point to get on his feet.
But even that was hopeless.
Lin Hao was only a fish in the sea, and unemployment was at it's record rates.
Sure, there was a chance he could receive a call back or two, but the competition for the jobs was fierce. He wanted to give up each time, to surrender and stop.
But Fu Mei's suffering kept lighting a fire within him, he had failed as a man and refused to fail any further.
A notification came up on his phone, causing Lin Hao to rush for it. "Finally, is this a reward for my hard work!" But when he opened his phone, he found a strange notification.
[Want to change your life? Just press this OK button!]
"Huh? Is this some kind of prank?" He thought it was one of those ridiculous scams he fell for most of the time.
But he felt an urge to just press the button, if it was a scam he could just close the window anyway!
As Lin Hao's thumb came into contact with the button on his phone screen, a massive glow shot out from the phone itself.
The entire room he was in became bathed in a ethereal glowing light, transforming soon after into a crystal blue cyber like space.
A game-like window, one akin to the many video games Lin Hao had played throughout his life popped up in front of him.

"Huh!? Woah what's going on!' Lin Hao reached out, everything around him fading to black.
This was only the beginning, of his strange journey.
