Chapter 39 - Developing Feelings

Ava rushed into her office and quickly shut the door. With her back resting against the door she placed her hand on her chest. Her heart was beating fast.

What just happened? What was she about to get herself into? What was she thinking? Had Nancy not walked in when she did, Mason would have kissed her. A part of her wished that has happened even if she hated to admit it, countless times she had imagined what it would feel like to be kissed by him.

"Ava stop it! He's your boss!"

The door to her office swung open the force pushing Ava away from the door causing her to stumble. Nancy burst in looking livid. "What was the meaning of that?" Nancy asked in anger.

Ava swallowed hard as she tried to think of a good explanation for what was about to transpire between her and Mason just before Nancy walked in on them. But she knew Nancy understood what she saw, she was no baby. Ava just ended up spoiling any chance she had to make Nancy like her.

There was no explanation Ava was going to give that was going to make sense. So she decided to keep quiet and allow Nancy to do her worse. There was so much she could do, it's not like she was going to beat her, and she couldn't sack her, she was neither the boss nor the HR.

"But she is fucking the Boss," a voice reminded her.

Nancy walked closer to her, her eyes bearing every hatred she has for Ava. She smirked making her look so evil with her red lips.

"Now I see the reason you chose to dress...." she sized Ava up like she was a little girl. "You chose to dress this way because you were hoping to catch Mason's attention," she continued to come closer and Ava continued to move backward until her back hit the wall and she had nowhere to run to. Nancy stood in front of her, she stretched out her hands and touched Ava's hair causing her to flinch.

"So, you thought you could seduce Mason with your cheap clothes and fake blonde hair?" A pearl of humorless laughter escaped Nancy's lips.

Ava wanted to correct her that her hair color wasn't achieved with a dye and that she was a natural blonde, but decided against it. It was of no use.

"I must give it to you though," Nancy said after she had stopped laughing. "You just started working here, when? A minute ago, and now you want to get in the boss's bed? I'm sure you must have thought that you must have succeeded just before I walked in?" Nancy laughed again.

"Nancy, I think you've got this all wrong. I wasn't trying to….."

"Shut up you liar!" Nancy said interrupting Ava causing her to shrink back in fear, Nancy looked like she was going to hurt her.

"If you love yourself, then you would stay away from Mason. Because whatever it is that you are trying to do, is going to end up hurting you."

She placed her hand under Ava's chin and held it.

"Honey, you look naive so I'm going to give you a word of advise. Mason loves women and has slept with almost all the girls in this company. So my dear, don't think you are any special. You would just be joining the league if you decide to do anything with him."

"I wasn't....."

Nancy tightened her grip on Ava's chin causing her pain and forcing her to look into her eyes.

"Do you understand anything I've just said?"

Too afraid to speak, Ava nodded in response.

"Good. You had better stay away from him if you want to keep this job. And from what I heard, you need it. So you had better behave yourself." Nancy said her last sentence in a very disdainful manner.

Nancy released Ava's chin and she wiped her fingers in disgust on a napkin that was on the desk and then she gave Ava a disdainful look before walking out of the office.

The moment Nancy left the office, Ava crumpled on the chair behind her desk, a tear came down her cheek and she quickly wiped it off. She wasn't going to allow Nancy's words to get to her. She never had the intention of having anything to do with Mason, so whatever it is that he has done or is doing with other employees was none of her business. Mason was her Boss and she has no intention of their relationship being more than that.

"You have no intention of doing anything with him, but you were seriously anticipating his kiss before Nancy walked in," the voice in her accused.

"That was a mistake. We were both carried away in the moment," she said wiping another tear drop on her cheek. She wasn't crying because Nancy said Mason was sleeping with every female in the office, but because of the way that Nancy had spoken to her, like a nobody.

Shaking off the thought from her head she decided to get to work, whatever Nancy did, she did to make her feel bad and feeling bad was only going to mean that she succeeded. There was no way she was going to give her that pleasure.

Ava opened the laptop that was on her desk and got to work and soon she got lost in work.

When it was noon, Mason called her into his office to tell explain some things that he expected of her as his personal assistant and how to use certain features on her laptop.

Ava made sure to keep her distance while he was teaching her, avoiding any form of contact with him. She knew Mason noticed it but he said nothing. It's not like there was anything to be said, not after his girlfriend had met them in a compromising position.

"That would be all," Mason said after he was doing with what he was showing her. And Ava gathered her things to leave his office.

"Ava," he called out her name softly causing Ava to pause. "Could you please look at me?" He pleaded. She had been avoiding his eyes and staying at arm's length like he had leprosy. He couldn't take anymore and he needed to address the reason for her strange behavior.

Ava slowly looked up at him, focusing her gaze on his chin, hoping he wasn't going to notice.

"About this morning," he said looking at her face to see her reaction but her face held no expression.

"What about this morning sir?" Ava asked, feigning ignorance.

"About what happened this morning, I..."

"I'm sorry sir, but I can't seem to understand what you are talking about." Ava said with a straight face.

"Ava, there is no….."

Mason paused what he wanted to say when his manager Trevor walked in and Ava excused herself.

What did she mean when she said she didn't remember? Mason wondered after Trevor had left his office. He knew it was foolish of him to have wanted to kiss her. But he couldn't help himself especially with way her beautiful lips were calling out to him, he had wanted to kiss her right from the day that he had seen her at the restaurant for the first time. He was beginning to like her and now that they were going to be working closely it was going to be even more difficult to contain his feelings for her.
