Chapter 3 - Something New

"45 BC!? You're that old!? How in the hell are you..." Kavnar began to lose his mind, but was quickly interrupted by Benonai.

"Ugh... feeble feeble feeble... listen and write, please sir?" Ben sighed in an almost annoyed tone.

"You know something we haven't discussed? What exactly do I get out of this whole situation?" Kavnar complained.

"That's an excellent question indeed. Hmmm, how does your yearly profit four fold sound?" Benonai offered the barkeep.

Without any further hesitation, "Let's get back to it."

"I love it. Solid plan. Okay, again. This story begins modestly enough. It was the year of 45 BC I believe. Before this story goes any further though, it requires you to toss away any notions that monsters and magic do not exist. This is a terrible, feeble minded way of thinking created to keep you from being afraid.

Once you've tossed that aside, I must tell you about a being, of which you've undoubtably heard of, but I know you only know a quarter of the truth at best.

This being is called Sanguis Solis, or the Solis, as we have called them. You know them as a type of vampire."

"A v-v-ampire!? you're a Vampire!?" The Barkeep exclaimed.

"Ahem... listen and write..." Benonai said and the barkeep simply brought his quill back down and finished writing the last words he had just heard.

"There's much for you to know about this type of vampire. Yes, just like there are different human races, there are also different types of vampirism.

This type of vampirism is a very highly ranked bloodline, pun intended. They are very physically strong and resilient compared to most other vampires. All vampires are extremely stronger than your kind.

This alone doesn't define them. They have various extra abilities beyond that of speed and strength. They have a unique way of traveling. They can step through shadows, burst into a swarm of bats, and a few other forms of magic, but we'll get there.

Their most defining trait is that they can walk in the sun unimpeded. This is usually the point where your jaw drops from shock and probably horror. Yes, their are some who at one time could walk right beside you in broad daylight, and your kind was never the wiser.

Don't become disheartened. I have searched the globe in search for any of their kind left in the last two thousand years or more and they are gone. Well, to an extent, they are. More on that matter later.

There's another being that I'd like to bring your attention to that you've heard stories of. A werewolf. Yes, they use to exist. Your kind are responsible for nearly their entire extinction. Vampire's did the rest. Yes, there was a nasty feud between the two.

There was one particular type that was known for being able to fully control their transformation, even able to stop the forced transformation entirely when the moon became full.

These werewolves were more sophisticated and not nearly as mindless as the rest of their kind by far. They also have more of a humanoid figure than your idea that they are just giant wolves.

I know at the moment this seems like an informative essay on mythical creatures that actually exist, but stick with me.

It was the year 45 BC. The Roman Empire had yet to really begin. There was a young woman who was a part of a nomadic tribe. This was in modern day Italy, by the way. This nomadic tribe happened to be a bloodline of the aforementioned werewolves who could fully control the transformation. She was the Alpha's daughter, but that meant nothing really in the hierarchy except that she had an excellent bloodline.

One day, she ventured into town, and was approached by a very charming man. I assume he was able to romance her well enough, because they eventually performed the act of mating. Just so you know, this was absolutely forbidden for the Alpha's daughter to be doing. She was supposed to be betrothed to the gamma's son.

Nevertheless, she returned to the tribe with her supplies that the man had secretly paid for. She didn't know it, but she had been impregnated. The Alpha could smell it instantly. His daughter had been tainted. It pained him to do it, but he cast her out.

This was a terrible situation. Pregnant by a strange man who she had no clue if he was still in that little town, she knew that she was probably done for. Even in normal society, she'd be an outcast. She'd be labeled a whore, an uncouth pariah.

Despite everything, she still went to that town and tried to survive her pregnancy. At least after she had the child, she could move to another town where no one would know her. Then she could lie and say her husband had been killed tragically or something, and that would make her accepted into society again.

She barely made it through the delivery of that child, but soon she had in her arms a little baby boy. As time would pass, she did as she planned. The new town accepted her with open arms, and the boy grew up to become a man.

At the age of twenty three, however, tragedy struck for him. A set of Roman soldiers came into their little village and began to slaughter those that opposed their will.

The young man gathered a few of his and his mother's belongings and attempted to escape the madness with his mother. However they were pursued. As the single soldier closed in on them, the boy drew a sword and decided to stand his ground.

The Roman soldier and he battled for a while, but the young man landed a lucky strike and felled the soldier. This was where things got interesting.

Something took place that the mother had tried so hard to prevent. That young man had triggered his werewolf genes by committing murder.

Unfortunately, it also was not that simple, because it also triggered something else. He transformed right then and there but not by the normal means. He burst into a flock of bats and then formed into a beast the world had never seen..."
