Vanessa didn't know if it was Alex's words or the way he had said them, but for some reason his words seemed to take the wind out of her sails. Why did he sound like he was lonely? She had noticed the way he had stared at her and Sophia the previous evening after she gave Sophia the pizza box. Was he really lonely? Did he have no one in his life to share his burdens with him? Vanessa wondered, and then she quickly dismissed the thought when she remembered what a cold-blooded jerk Alex was.
Of course, it was only natural that someone like him would have no one beside him. He was rude, arrogant, mean, and insensitive. No one would want to stay with a person like him, so there was no reason to feel sorry for him.
"I'd rather you let me know next time if Sophia approaches you with anything of such importance," Vanessa said, and Alex raised a brow.
"Have you paused to ask yourself why she came to me, and not you?" Alex asked, without sparing her a glance.
