Vera glanced superstitiously at Dan. Had she heard the announcer right? 

"Educated barbarian?" Dan breathed in a quiet shock. "That's so rude. It makes it sound like the northerners aren't educated at all!" he seethed a little too loud and she nudged him as someone in front of them shushed them.

"But... but it downplays how brilliant you actually are," he whispered sounding hurt. As touching as it was that her friend was angry on her behalf, the misconception that there was any sort of love story between them at all was the bigger problem. 

She glanced around worriedly at the other people and luckily none of them seemed to have heard him or recognized them as they were eagerly scooting closer to the puppet stand. 

"I hardly think that's the part to worry about," she whispered pointedly and he looked at her.
