"Sir, I have information on the woman you asked me to look into." A man in a crisply ironed suit said once the conference hall was emptied of its board members. "Should I send you the file or inform you now?"
"Do both." The unsmiling man seated at the head of the table replied. He leaned back on his chair and closed his eyes, massaging his temples slowly with his fingers. "Tell me everything you got."
"Her name is Kaia Denise Evergold," The suited man named Lionel began, "she was born on October 13th, 1999 at Sarah Letters Memorial Hospital in Red Oak Creek, a small Texan town but moved to New Jersey when she was 1 because of her dad's job. By the time she was 9, her mother became an absent figure in her life leaving Kaia and a two-year-old toddler, Chanel, with her husband. She's lives in Spain now, married to… Alvaro De La Vega, the aristocrat."
Luca Davenport's previously calm eyes moved underneath his closed lids at the mention of that name.
The other man slightly cleared his throat and continued, "Kaia's dad had a stroke when she was 14, and since they had no other known relatives, she and her little sister were taken by Child Protection and Permanency, where they were separated but Kaia fought for custody once she turned 18 and got her sister back-"
Luca raised a hand, signaling his trusted right man, Lionel, to stop. A second later he cracked open his eyes, a piercing gray, and stared right at the huge conference room door on the other side of the room.
"Irene." Luca simply said and a few seconds later, the door opened, revealing an exquisitely dressed, beautiful redhead in large shades. She gracefully took them off, her green eyes zeroing in on Luca.
"I'm flattered to know you recognize me so easily." Irene Karlsson's elegant accent was directed at Luca and the latter felt his wolf growl with indifference. "Good to see you too."
"You can leave." Luca told Lionel, his eyes fixed on Irene as she took the closest seat by his left, all smiles. Lionel quietly exited the conference room, giving his boss and the prime minister's daughter some alone time that would probably be cut short soon by Luca.
"I was told I would find you here." Irene said, leaning forward on the table toward Luca, highlighting her generous cleavage that was enough to make a man stare. Luca was unfazed.
"What do you want, Irene?"
There was a soft, mock gasp. "Not even a 'it's good to see you again after so long'?"
Luca stared at her for a long second, then parroted her words with no distinct interest in it. "It's nice to see you again after so long."
With that, he pushed away from his seat and started to make his way out of the conference room when Irene spoke up again.
"Who was Lionel talking about?" She asked and Luca could practically smell the bouts of jealousy she was trying, but failing, to suppress. Of course Irene was like this, when he never showed any interest in anyone other than his whole world in a little package, Giselle.
If Luca wasn't partially indebted to her mother, Rita Karlsson, the current prime minister of Sweden, he wouldn't have tolerated her this long. Irene had made it a habit of trying to insert herself into his life even though she had no right to. Luca had reminded her of this several times but the lady never let go of the possessiveness she had.
Luca would make sure to remind her once again. With a slight inclination of his head towards her, Luca ignored how he could practically feel Irene's wolf yelp excitedly at the small gesture of indulgent.
"You have no place asking about my personal business, Irene," Luca said, keeping his anger in check. "Know where you stand in my life, I do not appreciate the nosy interest. Also, if you please, never walk into work space without any prior notice. I won't repeat anything I said now anymore."
And with that, he walked out of the conference room, leaving behind a dejected woman who would probably turn at deaf ears to his words.
Luca went up to his office, where he saw the thick file on Kaia Evergold already on his desk. He dived into it for hours. When he withdrew from it, it was already close to midnight.
He would have to pay for a trip or something more low-key in gratitude for how efficient Lionel was in his research. The sigma wolf wasn't only a right hand man to Luca, he was also the closest thing he had to a good friend. He never understood why Lionel chose to work for him, despite how very self sufficient he was as a lone wolf.
Yet through his toughest times; Prudence's death, starting a new pack, even raising Giselle, Lionel had always been there, with no complaints and enough respect.
Even though Luca was not one to show a lot of emotion, he recognized and appreciated effort and loyalty when he saw it.
Several minutes later, Luca was speeding away from the majestic office building he owned, in his Lycan Hyperspot, towards the airport. He had called ahead for them to prepare his jet for him.
Even though it was midnight, there were always people at Luca Davenport's service, even if it was an unexpected flight from Seattle to Nashville to see a certain human named Kaia Evergold.
