"IT'S TWO GOLD, ONE SILVER," a trader's voice went up in the crowded streets of Calipsos.

"For a goat?" the man standing by his stall frowned.

The trader had a tent donned in gray veils. His dark hair was matted by his brows and sweat clung to his clothes at hollow places. His armpits. The collars of his drenched shirt, and even the lower portions of his breeches. That part of the body's extremity where no man was meant to perspire—at least not in public.

The trader didn't seem to mind at all. His eyes were set rather on the customer about to purchase from him. A throng of people milled about and the air, perpetually hot, stung with the scent of brine blowing in from the Carrean sea and drying piss from the debauchery of the previous night.
