With almost thirty thousand pre-saved copies, A Game of Thrones was finally ready to release.
And considering how the book was promoted overseas, people and the readers waited for an epic fantasy story to unravel.
The case was the same for Eric, the fourteen-year-old in the wheelchair.
In a two-story house, in the middle of Northern California, Eric's family lived. He had one elder sibling and one younger sibling.
"Eric, tomorrow is the book launch, isn't it?" the elder sister questioned as she swiftly walked inside the living room.
Eric was already reading a book that was in his hand. He used to be one of the popular kids in the school, who was in soccer practise the whole day. But due to one unfortunate accident, he quickly became a victim of bullying.
The popularity he gained quickly turned into something he hated as he saw his fellow players gaining much more popularity for winning games after he had to leave the team.
Although he had a ping of jealousy towards them, he felt helpless. He felt useless in a world where everyone had something ongoing—when he was just in bed.
Which was why his mother turned him towards books.
The fictional world was found soothing to him as he started living through the characters. At first, he was sceptical because he didn't want to become a 'bookworm', but he ended up reading whenever he got time, as much as possible.
However, Ian Renner was a novice author who started his journey as a director but now he had stolen many hearts of readers, including the heart of Eric.
Eric's first and foremost favourite author was Ian Renner—one he couldn't forget.
"Yes, it is today. Can you bring it to me or…"
His sister looked at him. She handed over his sandwich and stood back at the kitchen counter.
"Do you want to come with me, Eric?" she asked.
Eric nodded.
"That'll be nice, thank you. Can you ask mama to stop by to help me get dressed?"
"Okay."
He balanced the sandwich in his lap and started turning the wheels of his wheelchair to reach his bedroom.
'I'm finally buying a newly released book! That too, from an author I met! Oh! This is so great!"
He said and thought of starting to get ready.
*Ding! Dong!*
The ring of the bell distracted everyone inside the house from their chores.
At this hour of the day, it could only be mail, as the mailman goes by the house, Eric thought.
"Eric, honey, it's for you!" his mother's voice echoed in the house.
"For me?! What is it?"
"Come here, you will see!" he heard his younger brother yelling with excitement.
Eric propelled the wheelchair and went to the living room.
The family members stood around the countertop of the kitchen, and the package was placed firmly.
Eric frowned seeing what it was.
"What is it- Wait! Ian Renner?! Are those books? Mom! Bring it over here," he said and tapped his legs.
The parcel was placed on his legs and he started to open it slowly.
".... Oh my!" tears started forming in his eyes as he kept looking at the books.
Ian had sent him the newest copy of A Game of Thrones with his signature and a note.
"T-This is the best thing that happened to me in a long time." The tears continued to stream down.
His family looked at him adoringly. He was very happy and that melted their hearts.
His mother patted his head and looked at him, "read the note. Let's hear what he says… And even when we met him, he was being really sweet. Such a good man."
Eric nodded and opened the note.
"Not giving up is the key to success. Good luck Eric, Happy reading! -Ian Renner…"
