My heart thumped against my chest as I and Emily scurried to get our aprons and fix our hair before serving customers who had already pilled in for their breakfast.
We had slept past the raging alarm clock that threatened our sleep. Elena woke up first, her ears sensitive to the noise and she nagged I and Emily till we got to the bathroom. I hailed a cab for Elena while Emily struggled to take a quick bath in ten minutes.
The early morning bustle was even more exhausting as we struggled to get the orders of the customers.
"I meant a chocolate cake." A customer in her early fifties spoke up as she lifted her framed glasses.
"We don't have that, ma'am." My eyes stared at the ground unable to look her in the face.
"Maybe you could check or make one." Her voice turned desperate and persistent.
I sighed heavily, "It's not my job to make one. The chocolate cake isn't ready yet, ma'am."
