No one responded.
The servant hurried out of the kitchen, "Mr. Simmons had to go out for a bit, said he would be back later."
Hannah nodded, her gaze falling on the chessboard as she pondered something, then asked another question, "Did he say when he would be back?"
"He didn't," the servant shook his head, hesitantly adding, "But it should be soon, I guess."
Hannah told the servant to leave.
Now she was the only one left in the spacious living room.
The television was playing a cartoon, with two non-human characters having a great time.
Hannah reached for a coat nearby, draped it over her shoulders, and stared blankly at the chessboard for five minutes.
She then moved a black piece that was about to form a row out of place before placing her own white piece.
Half an hour later, Arnold still hadn't returned.
After instructing the servant not to tidy up the chessboard, Hannah rose to leave.
