Due to the range of each section being highly calculated, the mages didn't even need to aim; they already knew where the shield line ended, so there was no need to think about avoiding friendlies; As the assault line would always be behind the defenders when the magic fell, this allowed the mage unit to focus on their primary purpose.
This was to eradicate as many enemies as possible while they were engaged with the shield line. When the magic spells fell, the enemy monsters were destroyed again without much fuss; even Gluttonbutchers were demolished by the might of multiple spells bombarding such a small area.
