AMIRA
I have found myself in an awkward moment before, most if not all of us have found ourselves in an awkward moment before but do you know that awkward situation you find yourself that you feel it is the most awkward moment of your life that is how I feel right now. like I won't recover from the embarrassment I feel as I bowed my head and apologised for what Ruby did.
"The bitch hit me first. Why the hell are you apologising to these rich snubs?".
She was angry, and I knew if she didn't stop, this matter would escalate. Not like it won't. My presence alone has made this a major case. The way Samantha smiled wickedly when she saw me said it all. I pulled Ruby down to a bow and scolded her, "Apologize immediately."
"please". I added.
She wanted to object, she's a stubborn fellow, but after she heard the plea in my voice, she grumbled an apology.
"She doesn't look sorry one bit. Are you going to do your job, officer or should I call your boss? " Samantha shouted at the officer.
"She already said she is sorry, and from what I heard, they were both in the wrong, so why are you trying to make a case out of nothing?" I said as politely as I could.
"She was clearly asking for a beating when she refused to leave my spot." The girl who looked Ruby's age with blisters on her lips spoke for the first time.
"Cause your name was written boldly on the chair, right?" Ruby made to go after her, and I held her back.
"Trying to make a case out of nothing? Who the hell do you think you are?". She looked really angry as she stood up from the chair she sat and walked up to me.
Yeah, who do I think I am to face her head on. She is from a rich home, and everyone adores her while I am that wretched daughter no one remembers. It has always been this way, so why try to fight her when I would never win. Call me a coward
but in this place where I grew up, those with money are always in the right.
"I..."
"Why are you still here?". A rough, deep voice that sounds familiar and, at the same time, unfamiliar interrupted me.
"Brother..." The girl who got in a fight with Ruby cried running towards whoever was behind me.
"I have been wronged brother take a look at what they did to my pretty face." She cried
"This day couldn't get any more shitty." Ruby scuffed, and I agreed with her. Whoever that kid's brother is probably very rich for Samantha to look out for, and that would be double the problem.
"Quit trying to reason with these people it is obvious they want me looked up. Are you going to kneel and lick her feet if she asks you to?".
Ruby was right. Samantha was out for us and won't stop at nothing until she gets her looked up and me disgraced.
"Why do I get assigned to this type of case?" The officer murmured, slapping a file on his desk and looking up at us.
He rolled his eyes in disgust when they met mine and said, "You should try advising your sister to keep her hands to herself, especially if it is someone she can't afford to mess with."
"To think you call yourself a police officer. There was evidence that she started it on the cctv, but you want to put the blame on my sister. Why cause we aren't so rich to grease your hands?". I shouted, tears coming out of my eyes out of its own accord.
Shit, I was crying, looking very helpless. I was so mad that today was already a bad day for me at work only to get a call from the restaurant that my sister was at the station and ran over with greasy worn out jeans and an old t-shirt that could pass for a rag compared to Samantha's. A messed-up hair and the smell of disgust lingering all over me. Why does it have to be Samantha? Why do I have to meet her after seven years as a throwback of myself. Note that I was worse than myself now.
"Honey, let's go. The police will take it from here." I almost forgot Samantha was still here feeling satisfied with how pathetic I was.
"This isn't fair and..." The words got stuck in my mouth. I couldn't speak or breathe or move. I just stood shocked as I stared back in disbelief at the man behind me.
I was wrong. This situation now is the most awkward of the awkward situation I have been in. Caleb fucking Owens stood in front of me someone I never thought I would see again. Today must be my day of reckoning. Every goddamn person in my past I tried avoiding coming after me one after another on the same night who is next? My dad, my stepmother, my high school classmates.
Get a hold of yourself you dumbass.
I can't get a hold of myself, not when I look like this. How the hell did they choose today of all days to appear? I really thought I left my past behind seven years ago. I just realised I can't run forever.
"Are you even listening to me?"
"Eh." I jolted when I realised he had been talking to me.
He sighed and then waved the officer away. I didn't notice it earlier, but Caleb was no longer as lean as he was in high school.
I don't know, maybe because it has been seven years since he left high school and there is something called maturity, you dumbass! my subconscious screamed at me.
"Why don't we settle this without the police?". He suggested, a cold smile on his face. He didn't recognise me. Even if he did, he didn't show it. What was I expecting a hug? We didn't end things in a good note anyway.
"Okay." My voice came out hoarse and inaudible.
"But brother..."
"Shut your mouth." He scolded his sister, who hid behind Samantha, who protected her.
"Take it easy she got injured." Samantha defended.
"As compensation for injuring my sister, you will have to pay her medical bills, and we will call it even. Even though my sister started the fight, it is obvious your sister hit her more than is necessary, so I don't think I am acting the role of a rich man taking advantage of his wealth."
That last part was directed at me for sure. I agreed with him, Ruby dealt with her she obviously deserved it that spoilt brat.
"So how much will it cost to treat her? Send me your account number, and I will transfer it." I said as i brought out my phone.
"It seems you didn't get me. I don't need your money. I need you to take responsibility for what happened by taking her to the hospital and making sure she gets treated. " He sounded really cold, mean, and emotionless.
"Hey!"
"I will take her." I replied before Ruby could say whatever was about coming out from her mouth.
"Honey, you should go home. I will make sure she is treated and bring her back." Samantha suggested while running her hand through his shoulders.
He refused, telling her to go home and rest instead since she had been here for a long time, affectionately. Are they dating? They have known each other since childhood, and it would make sense if they were.
Why do I feel my heart ache? I thought we agreed to move on?
