Chapter 3 - Episode 3: There's Only One Monster Here

With the proclamation of the start of the Inquisitor's entrance exam, the stage in the middle of the stadium raised, shaking the entire stadium until it hit fifteen feet in the air.

Sable took in a deep breath. "The first test of the exam is simple. The first event is a simple foot race."

Don's face looked dissatisfied as he thought to Himself. "A foot race? It's cheating. Speed is my forte."

Sable raises his hand to a giant scoreboard as it lights up. On the screen are all the contestants' names and next to their names was the number zero.

Sable smiled. "You'll run across the field from one end to the other. Crossing the finish line will grant you fifty points. You will be granted ten minutes to cross the finish line."

An Erie silence rolled through the stadium. Don's brain started racing. "Points for crossing the finish line, and ten minutes to cross the finish line? Why do we have so much time, and more importantly, why are we granted points? If the whole exam was based on the points, it would make sense. However, that time limit tells me there's more to it. If I think about this logically, then the time limit with the addition of points could insinuate that during the race there could be more ways to earn points. I'll just take it slowly and gauge the situation from there."

Don took a glance around the stadium and noticed that quite a few applicants were looking around the stadium. Leading him to believe that they came to the same conclusion as him. although there are many other applications he could overhear, saying this test is stupid simple. Sable's voice can be heard on the large speakers on the walls of the stadium.

"On your mark...."

Don looks around to see half of the applicants leaning in position, ready to sprint.

"Get set...."

Don tries to get in a sprint position before a hand grabs his shoulder. Don turns around to see the man with green hair he was talking to earlier. The man gives him a simple nod of no. Sable's voice rings through the stadium.

"GO!!!"

Half of the applicants take off in a dead sprint. Don looks at the green-haired man. "Ummm?"

The man looks at Don " Names Oscar."

Don leans up. "Oscar, why'd you stop me?"

Oscar gives him a faint smile. "Cause I like ya kid and didn't want to see you die."

Don turns his head, confused. "Die? What do you me...." Before Don could finish his sentence, a grotesque sound of meat smashing rings from behind him. Don turns around to see giant black spiders covered in blood. Their torsos looked like a skull screaming. Over ninety percent of the half of applicants that took off were all dead.

Oscar lets go of Don's shoulder. "Point Games are always like this."

Don's expression changes. "Point games?"

Oscar pulls out his bow. "Point Games are not about completing the assigned goal." Oscar then nocks an arrow on the bowstring. "It's about getting at least twenty points more than the goals point count." Oscar then pulls back his bowstring as his eyes glow green. Don can hear Oscar whisper a silent phrase. "Sagittarius guides my aim."

Oscar then slowly releases his arrow. In an instant, the arrow flew at a lightning speed, with such force that Don and the applicants around him get jogged back. The arrow flies straight through two of the spiders. However, they show no sign of being hit. Don looks at Oscar with a blank expression. "Did you miss?"

Oscar's eyes were still glowing a bright green. "I never miss." Oscar then snaps his fingers and the two spiders that he had hit explode.

On the scoreboard, next to Oscar's name, twenty points appear. Oscar smiles confidently. "And with that, I can cross the finish line." Oscar then jogs towards the goal.

Don comprehending the situation smiles. "So I only need to kill two of these bugs? Game on." His eyes glow bright blue before he screams, "RAT KING!!!" In a flash of light, his worn-down trench coat appears on his back. Don looks around at the chaos, looking for the perfect target. Then one spider catches his eye. The spider was eating another applicant. Don jumped at the opportunity and in an instant takes off. Don's speed quickly takes all the applicants by surprise.

On top of the stage, the white-clad man with long brown hair looks over at sable. "That kid is crazy fast."

Sable's face stays a blank, expressionless image. "Yeah, he's fast, but speed isn't gonna help against those."

The White-clad man smiles slightly and shrugs. "Yeah, those are Screaming Skulls, children of Gluttony. They are really durable and tough-skinned, so speed isn't the best weapon for them."

Don smashes into the Screaming Skull with a smile on his face. "How do you like that?" Don's smile quickly disappears as he sees that his attack had no effect on the Spider. With its long spindly leg smacks Don away. Don bounces off the field twice before the corpse of an applicant stops him. Don leans forward on his knees coughing up blood, as he thinks to himself. 'Damn, I messed up big time. I'm barely keeping myself conscience.' Don slowly looks up to see the Spider walking towards him. Scared, he leans back and tries to crawl backward.

The white-clad man sighs. "Well, too bad I wanted that kid's speed for my squad. He would've been a great Inquisitor with a miracle like that. Too bad because he's scared shitless he'll die."

Sable laughs softly. "I wouldn't be so sure of that."

Don panics as he thinks 'How do I get out of this? How do I survive this?' Don slips on the corpse that stopped him from bouncing earlier. "Am I gonna end up like this guy?" Don then feels something touching his fingertip. Don grabs it to see a black short sword. It had no hilt and little chips around the edge of the blade.

Sable looks over at the white-clad man. "Caleb, as you know, we screen all participants thoroughly before the exam. As it so happens, that kid Donaldo Espinosa..."

Don looks deeply into the sword and can't help but remember the recurring dream he's been having. Only this time it's a little clearer. The man on the mountain of corpses had a sword in his hand and the voice of the man became clear. "Donaldo, this is how you kill."

In an instant, Don takes off at super-speed toward the spider, instantly cutting it in half. Before the spider's lifeless body could hit the ground, Don had already slashed through two other spiders and crossed the finish line.

Sable smiled at Caleb. "Don comes from a family of the worst humans to ever walk this earth."

Oscar pats Don's back while Don falls down. "Don, that was great. You got second place." Don looks up, shocked to notice that only forty applicants survived, and that they had already crossed the finish line before him. The only thing that was more surprising was that no one was paying attention to him. Don look around a little disappointed, thinking to himself. 'I know I faltered a bit, but I thought that what I did was impressive, well at least I got second.....' Then in an instant, Don then realized if he got second, who got first? He peeked up at the scoreboard, and what he saw made his heart drop. Next to Don's name was eighty points.

Sable smiled. "Don and the other applicants may have potential, but none of them are monsters."

Caleb and the rest of the knights had cold sweat and shivers running down their backs. On the field, a single man walked through an uncountable number of spider corpses, his expression cold and bored.

Sable's smile now reached ear to ear. "There's only one monster here!"

On the scoreboard above Don's name, in the first place slot, shined the name of the genuine hero of this story. Ryan five hundred points.
