Alita became scared and confused and worried all at the same time. The vampires she had killed in the past were not set to attack her like these. She had taken them unawares. But these ones were battle-ready and trained vampires, looking at her like she was their greatest enemy. Worse, there were six of them. How was she supposed to tackle this?
The sound of the fighting going on outside was still clear in her ears and before she could even wonder who was fighting who, two of the vampires before her attacked.
They were fast. Too fast she barely managed to avoid their razor-sharp claws. Thankfully, she escaped from being impaled, not unscathed though as one of them had drawn blood from her upper arm. Without wasting another second, she switched from defense mode to attack mode.
In no time, the two vampires attacking her were down, stone dead with a hole in their chest. The other four stood dumbstruck, looking from the dead ones to her. Fury burned in their eyes as they all attacked her at the same time.
Alita dodged a heavy blow aimed at her head and the vampire's fist got lodged in the wall, creating a hole in it. In the process of withdrawing his hand, Alita caught hold of it with her hand while using her other hand and legs to fight off the others. It wasn't easy at all. This was the first time she was doing something as tasking as this. She had trained hard. Her uncle had tried to prepare her and he did that for one full year before his sudden disappearance. Even after that, she continued the training on her own just to be prepared, but now that it was happening, she realized that it was more difficult than she had thought.
By the time the vampire she held fell dead, she had already received various degrees of cuts and bruises all over her body. Her white nightdress was now bloody red and hanging on her body by one strap on her left shoulder. Fighting off four vampires at the same time with her back on the wall had her heart racing faster than ever and beating so loud in her ears. It became even harder to concentrate on all three vampires remaining as she was already losing strength.
A deadly blow got lodged in her stomach, causing her to double over before finally falling. A scream erupted from her lips as the excruciating pain coursed through her entire body. Never had she felt such pain in her entire life. Her hands flew to her stomach and she coughed up blood.
The moment it suddenly became hard to breathe, she saw the vampire who had punched her hovering above her in preparation to deal another blow. Her vision started to blur as she anticipated the oncoming pain. She shut her eyes, waiting, but nothing came. When she was about to give in to the darkness that was pulling her in, Kayla's voice echoed in her ears and she forced her eyes open.
"Oh my God, Lita!!" Kayla gasped and ran to her side. She had woken up the moment she heard the disturbance only to come out and find strange-looking men fighting and moving at a speed her eyes could barely follow. The next thing, she saw a bloodied-up Alita lying motionless on the ground together with other strange men. What exactly just happened and is still happening? She forcefully tore her eyes away from the men that were fighting and ran to check on her friend.
"No... Run, Kayla." Alita said, but her voice came out almost as a whisper and lacked the urgency it was supposed to carry. More blood spilled out of her mouth as she spoke.
"Shh... Don't speak. I need to get you to the hospital. Where is my phone?" She looked frantically around the room which had now turned into a huge mess with black blood and bodies scattered in different places. She noticed that the strange men who were fighting had taken the fight outside so she hastily ran back to the bedroom to retrieve her phone.
Alita pushed herself into a sitting position when she noticed that the pain and weakness were gradually easing. But she was not the only one who felt better. The last vampire she thought she had killed had not actually died since she held his hand not his chest. Though his eyes had turned a darker shade of red, almost black, there was no hole in his chest. He stood up, grinning like a demon as he slowly trudged towards her.
She tried to activate her powers, but it wasn't working. It seemed her body was too weak or maybe she had lost too much blood. She couldn't say exactly why, but no matter how hard she tried, it just wasn't working. She finally stopped trying and glared at the vampire who was now standing before her, arms stretched and claws elongating.
The moment his hand drew back, her eyes snapped shut, expecting the pain from the impact of the hand that was about to drill her chest. Instead of the pain, she heard a sound which she didn't understand at first until she opened her eyes.
Her eyes stretched wide in shock and fear as she realized that Kayla had hit the vampire on the head with a shovel. What? Oh god please let this not be happening for real. What was Kayla still doing here? She was supposed to run, to save her life. Why was she still here?
The vampire stood still as if he couldn't believe what just happened to him. She could see that his eyes were slightly widened in shock. Another hit from the shovel landed heavily on the back of his head before he could even finish processing the first one. This time, Alita knew there was going to be trouble.
Just as soon as she saw fury take over his features, she abruptly stood up, ignoring the pain and weakness she was feeling at the moment and tried to activate her powers again. She wasn't going to let these creatures take another life that was important to her. At the same time, she screamed at Kayla.
"Run, Kayla."
