Chapter 2 - Oatmeal, Jello and Sarah

Three days have passed since I woke up in the body of my all-time favorite Country singer, Jason Montgomery. Sure, we tried to get to know each other a bit, but mostly he just slept while desperately tried to recall what happened to me. I wasn't sick. I was never sick. I didn't have any enemies that I was aware of. Seriously, the last thing I remember was sneaking out to go to my best friend, Amy's birthday party...

*Some time ago...

"Girl! You're coming over tonight, right? I have someone I want you to meet." Amy smirked as she elbowed me in history class. Amy was always over-the-top excited with life. Her bubbly personality, long, blonde hair, blue eyes and pouty lips garnered her the attention of anyone she set her eyes on. I was considered quite beautiful, too so I didn't envy her beauty, but I was jealous of her freedom.

"But I'm grounded! Or did you forget that I got caught sneaking out with you last weekend?" I whined. She was able to go anywhere, anytime with anyone she wanted while I had a strict schedule I had to adhere to. Last weekend she had talked me into to sneaking out to go a club downtown. Mother discovered my absence and retrieved me before I could even set my eyes on the inside of that club.

"Grounded, shmounded. C'mon, it's my birthday." She titled her head, looking at me with puppy dog eyes. "Jayden will be there."

Jayden? I've only been crushing on him since the sixth grade. I pursed my lips. For the life of me, I couldn't understand why I could never say no to my friend. She just always knew what buttons to push. So, with a big sigh of resignation, I gave in. "Fine! I'll try. But no promises. You know my mom."

I went home trying to figure out how I was going to get out of the house without Mother knowing. Fortunately, she was called in for an emergency at the hospital. Though she left me in the care of the house staff, I knew I wouldn't have trouble getting away from them. I had done it countless times before.

I made it my friend's house just as the party was getting underway. Everyone we knew from school was there, including my crush, Jayden... And his girlfriend, Clarissa. Ugh. I could claw her eyes out. Sure she's pretty – ish, for a redhead. Maybe he likes freckles? "Hey, Jessica!" she called as she waved with a fake smile on her face. And just as it looked like Jayden was going to say something, she slammed her lips to his, successfully shutting him up with her kiss. I can't stand her. I just rolled my eyes and continued to squeeze through the crowd in search of the birthday girl.

I bumped into the tall, dark and handsome lover of my friend. "Hey... Josh. Where's your girlfriend?"

He frowned a bit. "Where else?" He scoffed. "Upstairs, making money."

Huh? "Making money? What do you mean by that?"

"Want a drink?" he asked changing the subject. He made his way to the bar leaving me behind. It took me a few seconds to decide whether or not to follow him. I glance to the stairwell wondering what he meant but, figured I'd just ask Amy about it later. When I caught with up Josh, he handed me a fruity drink. "Don't worry, there's not much alcohol in it. I know you can't hold you liquor."

"Whatever." I scoffed. "I just don't like the feeling of being drunk. I like to maintain control of myself, just so you know."

He raised he hands in surrender. "Fine, fine. I believe you." He finished his drink before I had my third sip. "Excuse me. I see someone I need to talk to."

"That's fine. I'm going to try to find Amy, anyway. Thanks for the drink."

"Later," He saluted as he walked off.

I made my way to the stairs to find my friend. It took me several minutes because I had to stop and chat with a few people along the way. By the time I reached the top of the stairs, I had finished my drink and talked to no less than fifteen people. Most of which I didn't know or recognize. They must've been the college guys Amy was talking about earlier. I came to the door of Amy's bedroom and knocked while calling her name.

And that's the last thing I remember. I don't remember anything at all after that. Don't know if the door was opened or not. It was all blank and that scared me. Clearly something bad happened, otherwise I wouldn't have found my heart beating in this man's chest. But what? What happened. Jason said he'd look it up, but so far, he hadn't been allowed access to a computer or his phone, making it impossible for him look into my death.

Maybe, now that his voice is working again, they'll let him have his phone. He was told he could have visitors today after breakfast, so he's expecting his wife to come. Hopefully she'll bring his phone. My curiosity is killing me.

Jason, whom I thought was sleeping, interrupted my thoughts with his complaint. 'You know, you think really loudly. I'm trying to sleep here.'

'Well, I'm sorry it sir sleeps a lot. I'm still a little freaked out about being here if you don't mind.'

'Such an impatient girl you are.'

'I don't need patience. I'm not a doctor!'

'...'

'Aren't you the least bit curious?' I asked meekly.

'Of course, I am, but I can't do anything about it now can I?'

The door was pushed open and Dr. Hunter walked in with a nurse. "Ah, good. You're awake. How are feeling this morning?"

"Good." Jason replied as the doctor pressed a button to raise the head of his bed. "A bit hungry."

"Good. Good. Glad to hear it. Breakfast is on its way. I told Sarah; she could come by about ten. If you're feeling to tired, we can call her back and let her know."

"No. I want to see her. Tired or not, it's been too long."

"I agree. A man needs the comfort of his wife." The doctor grinned as he finished checking everything. "I'll come back and check on you later. Don't hesitate to call if you have any issues."

"I will Doctor. Thank you."

As the doctor and nurse left the room, the kitchen staff brought in his breakfast in. 'Ew,' I whined. 'Oatmeal. I hate oatmeal.'

"Thank you," He offered to the staff. They bowed in response and left him alone to eat. 'I like oatmeal, thank you.' He argued. 'Besides, I'm on soft food for a while. Be thankful, it's not broth.'

'Broth would be better.'

'Ew.' I felt his lips curl. He took a few bites of the oatmeal and strangely enough I could taste it. I was gagging internally. After the third bite, he pushed it to the side. 'Okay, you're right. It's not as good as I remember it. Do you like Jello?'

'I guess. Haven't had it since I was a little kid.' With that he took a bite of the jello. 'Wow! That's actually not bad. What is that flavor? Cherry.'

'Normally, I don't like jello.' He admitted. 'Maybe your heart has changed my tastes?'

'hmmn. Possible. I don't know how this transplant stuff works. I mean, I was always taught that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. The fact that I'm here at all is buggin me out.'

'I was taught that too. I don't know what to make of this either. I feel like I'm going crazy with your voice in my head. Do you understand how weird this is for me? I am a thirty-two-year-old man with the voice of a teenaged girl in my head. Doesn't that sound crazy to you?'

'Well, when you put it that way... wait! Your thirty-two? But you're hot! I would've never guessed you were so old!

'...' Just then the most beautiful woman I have ever seen came through the door. She was seriously drop dead gorgeous. I mean she could make a straight woman go bi. "Sarah," Jason breathed a sigh of relief.

"Darling!" she called as she cautiously hugged him. "I'm so happy to see you awake. You had me so scared, and they wouldn't let me in to see you." I felt her tears on his shoulder and I wanted to cry with her. So, I did. I could feel her anxiety in her embrace and my heart just broke for her.

"I'm okay, sweetie. Don't cry. I feel good. I'll get to come home sooner than you think." He kissed her temple and hugged her back. "I missed you, baby."

She pulled away and look at him full of love and worry. "You really feel good? No sign of rejection?"

"None so far. I'm good. I promise."

"You better be." She lightly slapped his arm. "I don't want to raise our child without you!"

"Our chi... You mean... It worked this time?" She nodded as more tears trailed down her cheek. "It worked!" he grabbed her hand and kissed it keeping his lips on her knuckles along time.

'What worked?'

"So, you have to get better. Your son... or daughter will need you." She smiled.

'Wait! She's pregnant?? You're going to be a dad? Cool! But what will that make me? I'm going to be a dad now? How's that work? Oh crap! I just thought of something. You have sex with your wife!! And I'm going to be there for it. Oh God, oh God, Oh God. Ew. Well, at least she's pretty but...'

'STOP!!' he pinched the bridge of his nose as he shook his head.

"You okay, honey? Should I call the nurse?" She rose up from the bed to get help.

'I mean, I don't mind seeing you naked, but I guess I never thought of what it would feel like to...'

'SERIOUSLY! PLEASE!!'

'Shutting up.'

"No!" he called. "It's nothing. I promise. Just a little tired is all. Maybe I should take a short nap?"

"Okay, Jason." She pressed the button on the bed to lower the head. "I'll g for now, so you can rest. I'll be back for dinner, okay?"

"Perfect, sweetie. Thank you."

"I'll let the nurse know on the way out that you're resting. I'm sure they will check on you in a bit."

"Thank you. And Sarah?" He called as she opened the door. "I love you!"

She smiled back at him. "I love you more. See you."

'Can you please control yourself around other people? I don't want anyone to know I have you in my head? It'd ruin my career if not my marriage. Please?'

Suddenly I felt a pang of guilt. 'I'm sorry.'

He sighed and closed his eyes. 'This whole thing is just too weird.'

'Agreed. But I'm seriously freaking out over the sex thing. I was a virgin before, you know.'

'Dear God, why me?'
