Joy said Derek wasn't her husband but he was probably her boyfriend. Rachel watched them over the next few days. He wasn't home much because of work but when he was home, he was hanging out with them.
When he wasn't, they did other things like trying to catch up on what she missed at school, doing at-home science projects, and playing games. They also went to her dad's grave.
Joy knelt down in front of it and touched it with tears in her eyes even though she was smiling. "Rachel's home, Paul. I brought her here to see you."
"Hi, Dad," Rachel said quietly.
It was hard to believe he was really gone even though she saw the proof right in front of her. She missed him but it wasn't any different than how things had been when she was alone. She was used to it. She couldn't even cry.
What was wrong with her? She had loved her dad and knew he loved her too.
