[40] If You Can't Learn, Then Work!
"I am sorry!" Kayra whispered as she didn't dare to look at the system in her mind space.
She stared at the colourful books and tried to memorize the letters but no matter how much she tried it's as if she had dyslexia, she couldn't remember those in the next moment.
The system stared at her sharply and gave her the recording of their earlier session. But even then, it was a failure.
{ Should I? }
Suddenly a metallic voice came from the earring on Kayra's ear. Phiphi stopped on the verge of flaring up.
It assumed Cardinal was a being of this δ-solar system and might have more understanding in the field of this planet's language than the system itself.
After judging the pros and cons, the system gave him a green signal. In the next moment, the earring turned into a lifelike mini red butterfly and flew in front of her. Then a mecha as the height of a tall man transformed in front of her.
The mecha had majestic armours and looked very cool~
For a moment Kayra wanted to whistle at him. Noticing the shiny and sparkling eyes of his master, the mecha felt her admiration.
"Cardinal, you look so handsome~" Kayra purposely teased him and then added, "You came like this… what if someone finds out?"
Kayra was worried. What would she do then?!
She didn't want to run away from this library. It's such a huge chunk of knowledge, and she wanted to come here every day to nourish her comprehension of the δ-solar system.
{Don't worry. No one would find out.}
After all, it's just a huge library. Except for stealing books, what could people do here? Also, the entrance had a scanner.
If someone carried sharp objects with them, then they would get caught. Not to say, the people here weren't ordinary in the first place.
Hearing his words, Kayra was assured. She decided to use all her five senses to learn today!
'Learn! Learn! Learn!
[Cute~]
{Let's start!}
Cardinal saw her fire spirit and was pleased as well.
He didn't mind the notion of teaching his master like earlier. Rather, if he met other mechas in the future, he could brag that he had the honour to teach his master!
At the same time, he wished that she would be powerful enough to operate him then!
"Hm-mm." Kayra nodded aggressively and sat obediently. In that closed place which appeared to be a vast rainforest, she was at the peak of her condition.
She didn't mind sitting on her seat for five hours straight, rather she was worried that she would lose all her remaining pride if she failed to learn even after giving it her all.
Cardinal pulled a huge screen out of nowhere and a virtual long ruler. In the middle of the huge screen, each letter appeared in a huge size.
Kayra repeated after Cardinal and tried to memorize them. At first, she thought that she was able to grasp everything clearly and able to verbalize them without any problem.
But right after 10 minutes, without anyone's notice, all the memorised letters from her consciousness began to vanish one after another. Even the system didn't notice the anomaly.
After 30 minutes when Cardinal went to the first letter and told her to speak, she stared at him blankly.
Cardinal got to see what 'depression' looks like for the first time! What did it look like? Her blank stare was it!
[Turns out you are worse than me! At least when I taught her, she was able to recognise the letters and misspelt them but when it was your turn, she already digested everything and the 'b' of the first letter couldn't be voiced!]
{That… something is wrong with Master!}
[Heh!]
Phiphi was furious and both Kayra and Cardinal could feel it. The mecha went back to Kayra's ear as his former butterfly form and turned mute. While on the other hand, Kayra dejectedly hung her head low.
Phiphi was angry at the girl. Do people with dumb children feel this enraged?! Why did it suddenly want to strangle her to death!
Nonetheless, Phiphi gently touched her brain waves and thought of giving her some inspiration.
[Host, in the future if you work harder, then… ]
"Snor~ Snor~ Snor~"
Suddenly, it heard her even breathing and snoring. Phiphi stopped talking and noticed that from some point on, the brain waves of Kayra were becoming slower.
[If you can't learn, then work!]
"Mm… '' Kayra gave her consent and completely let loose. She slept like a dead human until the next day.
…
It was Capitalia's library after all so all kinds of people came to study here, be it day or night. Thus, nobody disturbed Kayra and in that eco-friendly place, she slept quite well.
When it was morning, instead of going to find a place to eat, she went to a Cybercafe. Afterwards, she went online and applied for jobs. As she saw the rows of blank spaces in the job form, her heart ached.
'All those years of compulsory education were for nothing.'
A heavy sigh came out from her lips. She only put her ID card number and some rows got filled automatically. After she clicked the submit button, she thought, 'Will someone even hire me for jobs? Even I won't hire myself!'
[You can at least try.]
'I guess so. One day, the remaining money will end. There is no way I can sleep on the street then!' Kayra imagined and laughed as she walked out of the Cybercafe after paying.
With a long creamé baguette in her hand, she strolled through the streets of the Capitalia. From time to time, she pushed down the paper bag and took small bites of the tasty bread.
In that street, except for her, nobody was so relaxed and had the leisure to stroll around. Everyone was busily passing by her.
Kayra enjoyed her creamé baguette and smiled back at whoever gave her an extra look.
'I seem to be a beauty~ Not bad~' Kayra was delighted that even after changing her eyes and hair colour to black, her beauty didn't decrease. Rather she gave off another kind of warm feeling.
When she was walking on the streets of the Capitalia, without notice, she came to a much-deserted place. The surroundings looked different from the other places she had just walked on.
At one corner there was a huge parking lot and several high-class hovercars were parked there.
When she looked at the black buildings with huge glasses, she didn't understand at first and thought it was private property or something like that and wanted to leave.
[Host! Host! I just checked and found something.]
"What did you find?" Kayra asked curiously.
[This is a well-known restaurant. You can get a part-time job without even any qualifications! This job seems to be made just for YOU, an illiterate in δ-solar system!]
'Screw you, system!' Kayra harrumphed.
[... You! You! Why are you cursing people?]
'Humph!'
The system could never guess that every time it mentioned 'illiterate' how stifled she felt!
Not to mention after she failed to learn even a letter with the assistance of Phiphi and Cardinal, mentioning 'illiterate' was the same as jabbing her heart with an obsidian knife blade!
Even if there was a chance that she would try to get this job just to find a foothold in society, after hearing the system's words, she lost all interest and turned around to leave.
But before she could leave, she heard several heavy footsteps coming from behind.
A hand grabbed her wrist, and someone spoke impatiently, "Why are you so late?! Don't just stand there! The working hours will start in a few minutes. If you are late, don't beg later when I cut your Az!"
"Ah?! Aunty, you misunderstood~" Kayra spoke out urgently as she was being dragged to the side elevator of the restaurant.
"What?!" The woman stopped for a brief moment and examined her from up to bottom.
At that moment, Kayra looked far from the people who would come here to dine! She did not look like a rich, noble or powerful being and her sweet milky scent was not there to deceive people and help her anyway.
"I am not here for work..." Kayra tried to explain but the plump lady didn't want to hear her. When she tugged her wrist, the creamé baguette fell to the ground.
"Ah, my bread!" Kayra exclaimed!
"If you help us today, I will give you enough money to buy 100 breads like this!" The plump woman was tight on time and hastily dragged Kayra inside.
Kayra felt that she was a lamb being dragged for slaughter!
It's not like the woman was this unreasonable but earlier their head manager told her some big shots were coming to dine in their restaurant for breakfast.
In the morning it would be sufficient with half of the workers present. But after the news of those people coming here spread in the Noble Circle Forum, many people began to book tables early in the dawn!
Thus, even if Kayra demanded 5 times the original part-time pay, the woman was willing to pay her. Their image couldn't be collapsed just for the lack of manpower!
