Chapter 2 - Paranoid

"Madam...you should step away from the window." a man steps forward from the shadow dressed in black suit and an ear piece attached to his ear.

his eyes fixed on the woman standing dangerously close to the window as she peers over the city. her cold eyes rake over the sparkling city beneath her with disinterest. they narrow watching the cars moving over the highway like little ants she had the urge to squash.

with her arms folded against her chest she turns around to face her bodyguard who, according to her, had been pestering her for the past hour.

"these glass windows are bullet proof. I have spent a fortune on them mister Jared." she smiles at him as she scratches her nail paint off with her long nails.

she's pissed. really pissed.

"it wouldn't hurt to take extra precautions, madam." the guard retorts with out any shame.

baffled, the woman let's out a scoff. but figuring it wouldn't do her any good staying in close proximity of any human being. she was angry and she still haven't learned how to control this unwanted ire that all of a sudden took over her emotions months ago.

taking deep breaths to calm herself down, she utters a 'get out' to jared who of course wasn't taking the hint.

this dull prick!

"Madam please step away from the window. it's dangerous. we need to change your office room to somewhere more secure and safe."

relenting she steps away from window which looked more like a glass wall and slumps on a leather chair placed in front of a dark mahogany table in the right corner of the room, away from prying eyes.

her eyes find a spot on the ceiling refusing to look any where else. the black walls and grey floor. the expensive yet decent furniture with books stacked on shelves all around the room. a painful reminder of a masculine touch.

it didn't help in her suffering that a fading odour of cigarette and the sweet smell of lilac and dark chocolate still lingered in the corners of this room like a parasite eating away at her heart.

before she could go back to that dark corner of her soul, she aprubtly stands up, grabs her belongings and marches out of that haunting room without a second glance.

Jared swiftly pushes opens the door and then soundlessly closes it back.

"you're right..." Luciana mutters as she fishes out her shades and flicks them on, "I need to...switch rooms."

it was past twelve in to the night and the whole building was empty. all employees were off from work and prolly snuggling in to their beds since it was freezing outside and the last week of December.

as she steps into the exclusive elevator reserved just for the CEO and VIP guests, two more men dressed in black suits step behind her. their hands twitching with alertness. ready to whip their guns out and slay down any attacker on the spot.

"you think you can protect me for ever? maybe one day it will be too late and you will find me laying in my own pool of blood and a bullet between my eyes." Luciana lets out a sardonic laugh while picturing out her own death. she never felt safe since that night months ago. there have been countless threats and attacks on her life and slowly she was becoming paranoid without even realizing it. day and night she would sit in trepidation of the worst. fearing that someone will jump out and slit her throat or pull a trigger right in her face. she was living a nightmare she had no idea who to trust or where to seek validation of her safety.

no matter how much power she weilded in her hands or how many connections she had, in the end, they were all futile.

her being a highborn was her doom.

no matter what, she was a human after all and like any ordinary person she too feared dying. but dying not knowing when, how and where; frightened her.

and now this dread was holding her body and mind in it's thorny grip.

her eyes shine with sheen of distress and she was grateful they were behind the sanctuary of her dark shades.

her guards stood stiff like statues behind her, their lips pulled into a thin line. she could feel the tension rolling off their shoulders in wave and knew that she was ruffling their feathers for no reason but the tinge of satisfaction she felt was better than that fear gnawing her insides.

"hmm? cat got your tounges?" she turns around and fleetingly catches the eye of the stoic one with an army cut. it was bre if but she could swear to god his eyes screamed bitch at her.

she couldn't help anymore and let's out a giggle at that. her guards looking at her as if She's gone mad.

for a second there Luciana actually forgot her inner turmoil and steps out of the elevator with her bag swinging in her hands with a remanent of a smile on her face but it all dissolves into dust when she spots three more guards sneaking out of the shadows and making their heavy presence known as they start walking in front of them like robots on task.

it was impressive the way they have been working so attentively and have kept her unharmed, except those few times, but still she felt as if there was a lot of gap in between them and it was easy to take her out on the spot.

as she steps out of the building, two of her guards close in on her and place their gloved hands on her back and usher her to her waiting car, a sleek black sedan.

she should have let out a sigh of relief but her eyes finds the driver at once. he was an old man maybe in his early sixties and one of close aides of her father-in-law but that didn't mean she fully trusted him or the rest.

she trusted no one. it could be anyone with the gruesome task to kill her.

maybe she was getting overly paranoid now and it has started hindering her daily life too.

as the car peels away from the DeHaven Corporation, Luciana just has one thought in mind.

to get back to her room and lock herself inside for the rest of the bitter night.
