I lost myself in thought for God knows how long before lifting up my head slowly. I was totally lost with nothing in mind to help me and no one to rely on.
It didn't feel good nor did it make me feel angry. I just hated the fact that from this point on, my life would be in the hands of some strangers with no influence from my side to change that.
They could kill me, strangle me, hell, they could cut me to pieces and fry me before making a delicious burger. No one would know about it.
My hazy eyes that were focused on nothing in particular suddenly regained focus and I remembered the thing that started it all. My brand new curse.
"Is it still working?" I muttered quietly.
It said that it would update or something like that but I, being the 'oh-so-depressed' 15-year-old, ignored all of those notifications as if they didn't exist. It was very idiotic but more logical than me actually giving them attention.
"Let's try summoning this thing." My hand moved slowly replicating what some street performers will do when doing a magic trick but of course, nothing appeared.
I tried multiple times with different moves and even shouted many words and still no response. I even started suspecting if that thing was a reality or nothing but edgy lucid dreams of mine.
Getting tired of trying, I threw myself back on the ground with my limbs all stretched in all angles and kept on looking at the ceiling until I felt sleepy.
What I didn't know is that those who got me here were watching me with attentive eyes as if eyeing a hottie In the street.
Like that, a few hours passed, and I woke up, again and again, having the worst 3 hour-nap of my life and dealing with a sore body all over.
Then, the door that closed a few hours ago started opening slowly. Then the mischievous woman that was named Eveline came back along with a couple of bodyguards.
"Wakey wakey sleepy boy! We will have to go somewhere~" Her mocking voice and cheeky eyes never betrayed to make me pissed off.
I stood up from my position slowly and extended my arms for them. I wasn't in the mood to talk or interact with anyone so I might as well just do whatever they wanted.
We left the prison and went straight to a more desolate area of the lab where weird scientists, drunk on caffeine didn't go back and forth.
"This is my office. I'm here to have a serious talk with you. If you cooperate, we may find a middle solution for both of our sides. Your crimes are not that light after all.
Her office was as expected, messy and full of papers to the brim that there was no place for anyone to move or to sit.
" Now, Now! Take a seat wherever you want! There are plenty of vacant places ~" She said as she kicked some stacks of paper away on her way inside.
I found a chair and sat down without noise. Then, a weird silence reigned over the room, no one spoke as if we waited for our counterpart to start or show any kind of reaction.
"Sigh, this room is not supervised so you can rest assured and speak freely. I hold secrets well after all."
There was a slight change in her character or more like she changed her persona the moment we were alone. This showed how much of a devilish woman she was.
I didn't show much response except for a slight surprise at how quick she was to become more friendly.
Seeing my expression, she nodded with a satisfied noise and then continued, " So, let's be frank here, Elijah. The chances of you getting out of here alive are near impossible if not already being so. What you did is create a massive wave in basically the whole world. 'A weird black creature destroyed a whole city and killed more than 140 people in 2 hours, these news articles are increasing the backlash that you will get and the backlash the whole country will get. I was barely able to convince the higher-ups to let me get you for some time to do some experiments and even then, a few months won't be that much of a time."
She laid out the whole situation in the most honest manner and that made me feel even more guilty and sinful. I already knew half of that and the other half was not that shocking, but when she told me those things, it was even worse.
After Eveline stopped for a few moments for me to fully digest the hard information, she continued, "The situation being as it is will do more harm than good, so how about this suggestion? You will cooperate with me and tell me all the things you know about this creature inside of you, and I will try to give you another life, far away from the mess you created. A new chance for you to start a new page."
Her charming face rested on her hands as she waited for me to give her an answer.
'A new start?! How could that be possible? Should I really believe her words?' I was lost in a train of deep thought. On one hand, I had the bare, raw reality that will shred me to pieces in the future the moment I leave this place, and then, on the other hand, I had a slim chance of survival that was more likely being nothing but appeasing words from a smart woman.
It was a hard dilemma for me and I knew for sure that choosing between them will determine my life for years to come.
"Now, what do you say?" Her calm, angelic voice that made me frown before became something that calmed me down for some reason.
"Sigh, before I answer, are there any other choices?"
"Non."
"I guess that is true...Hahaha," I laughed at myself mockingly for being this powerless and then continued, "I will help you as much as I can. I hope you will keep your end of the bargain."
"Great! You will definitely not regret this choice ever!" Her eyes suddenly lightened up as if she heard the best piece of news and then extended her hand to me for a handshake. I looked at her soft, white hands for a second before shifting my eyes again to look straight into her green irises.
"I hope so." With an awkward handshake, the deal was sealed and my future for at least a few months was set in stone.
Then, Eveline called for the bodyguards to get me back after telling me that we will start the experiments tomorrow.
"Before I go...Can I ask you a question?"
"Go ahead."
"Why...are you trying to help me?" I asked cautiously.
"Fufufuf...I don't know myself...I just felt a weird connection with you the moment I saw you...I may be in love with you, who knows~"
Her answer caught me off-guard and I had to look her straight in the eyes to understand her intentions.
"Hahahahahahahaha!!" I didn't know why, nor did I want to know why, I just had an overwhelming urge to laugh loudly like a madman. It was a laugh that I thought will never appear on my face again and that I lost it beyond recovery.
This woman, this strange person, who I met for nothing but a few hours, changed me without me knowing. I felt like we knew each other for a long time as she navigated between the defenses I put on my heart and contorted my emotions in a weird manner no one was ever to pull off before. Even to this day, I still have that connection with her taking root in my heart, vividly pulsating with each time I remember her silhouette in a trance. It was not love, it was far from that, something I couldn't explain and couldn't understand. I also knew that she shared that feeling with me.
What I also didn't know is that this same woman will be the reason for a massive change in my life that will lead me to a whole new world ready to break me down on the first chance. This diversion in my life created the biggest ripple this world has ever faced.
