It was not until late evening that the last of the defenders fell back from the wall, leaving it open to attacks. The enemy rushed through it like waves crashing over a sandbar. It wouldn't be long for the city gates to open wide and the goblins to pour into the streets, killing indiscriminately.
"They're coming!" someone shouted. "Run! Run for your lives!"
A mob of creatures surged out of an alleyway, running towards the main street. Despair flickered in their eyes as they saw the walls towering above them. Inside the city walls that they thought they were safe, it became their prison. There was no escape.
Anguish was written on their faces as they ran. They were no longer warriors but terrified civilians who had been caught up in the battle. A few of them looked like they'd been wounded, and others were limping or dragging themselves along with their arms. Some even had blood dripping down their legs.
