The simple pronouncement echoed loudly in his pounding head. Apart from his head pounding, it felt like it was expanding, close to bursting. Kenny felt like his wife's declaration could not contain in the limited space of his brain.
Kate loved him.

How could it be?
Kenny could not wrap his head around that one. When she had said it, almost in a whisper to his father, one would have thought she had shouted the sentiment with how weakened his knees had gotten. Kenny had barely controlled the noise he would have made if he had fallen from the door following his weak knees. However, his hands had landed on the carpeted floor, stopping his fall while his mind swirled with what he had heard.
Fleetingly, he wondered if the whole conversation had been staged for his benefit. Had they known he had been listening in the next room?
