Ikom, January, 1975.
It is weird how the day starts out really nice and then, suddenly goes bad. This was the predicament that befell a little, sweet girl.
She had woken up to the smell of freshly rained on earth while birds chirped in the trees. Sunlight sparkled on the residue of water dripping from green leaves and flowers. The little girl hoped to enjoy a beautiful day, running around when she was done with her domestic chores.
As an African child, chores were an important part of growing up in an African home. Her parents declared that it taught her to be responsible for something. And her teacher in school said it did not just help her parents out when she did chores, she was also learning to contribute her quota to the development and success of society.
The little girl enjoyed school and reading. These were the things that could change her countenance from sadness to joy if the situation required it.
