"Good evening. This is Lady Otong speaking," the imperious voice of the high class society woman said, expecting to be acknowledged.
However, Udia pretended he could not recall her even though Commissioner Umoh had called a few days ago to intimate him on the woman calling to ask for his number. The commissioner had wanted to know if it was alright to give the lady his number. Of course, he had agreed, he had even expected such a move after the woman had heard that her precious son's girlfriend might be a fraud.
"Good evening, how can I help you, madam?" he responded in a stiff tone, one that meant he was speaking to a stranger not an acquaintance.
There was a slight pause, which Udia interpreted as disbelief that he had not immediately recall her. Lady Otong was a huge society lady known in all circles, that he could not recall her was regarded as a major affront.
