Chapter 148 - Chapter 147: Dealing with the Jackal incident.

Author: Happy Independence day from Malaysia~

...

"Hope this works," Gwen said as she injected Raymond with the cure for his condition. A purple liquid flowed inside his bloodstream, causing his veins to glow purple.

"I am sure it will, Gwen," Ryan said reassuringly as he stepped beside her. He held her hand as they monitored the data displayed.

Jackal in the glass cage started squirming as the animal DNA inside him started to burn off. Ryan controlled his mind to enter Jackal's mind during the transformation.

Inside of the messy subconscious, Ryan saw two personalities. The kind Raymond and the Jackal with a connected line between them.

"Let's avoid the probability of him coming back, shall we?"

He dragged Raymond's persona away from the Jackal and cut off any connection between them. Then, he used psionic energy to completely destroy the Jackal personality.

The dark personality of Raymond Warren completely dissipated into nothingness once Ryan was done.

Although Jackal was responsible for the human experimentations, it didn't mean that Raymond was innocent. Him being the cause of the incident drove Ryan to delete every single memory regarding the data of the experiments, leaving Raymond with only the memories of his actions.

Whether Raymond was regretful of his actions or not, he will find out about it in the future.

Jackal was created by Raymond in the first place as he ignored all the scientific ethics and experimented on his body as he was obsessed with the serum. Him being a chaotic factor had led Ryan to want to get rid of him... permanently.

"I wanted to kill you Raymond. I really do. But she will hate me forever if I do that," Ryan muttered to the kind personality before he got out of Raymond's mind.

Raymond had a big impact on Gwen's life. He was someone she respected the most and someone that she looked up to. Gwen still wanted to save him even after all that he had done, so as a supportive fiance, Ryan planned to help her the best way he could.

Gwen noticed that Raymond's condition stabilized after a few minutes.

"Uncle Raymond? Can you hear me? Uncle Raymond?" She tapped on the glass cage, trying to wake Raymond up.

"Urgh-," Raymond groaned, but he still hadn't woken up yet.

"He's all right now Gwen."

"Yeah…now what should we do with him?"

Ryan sighed and discussed something with Gwen – finally settling on something after a fierce debate.

Gwen wanted Raymond to surrender himself to the authorities, but Ryan already knew what would happen if he did that. He decided to lock him up himself, but Gwen argued with him by saying that although he was a monster, they shouldn't treat him like one.

Therefore, they reached a compromise with their intentions for Raymond.

It's been a few hours since he was injected with the cure and now he finally opened his eyes.

"Where…am I?" He muttered slowly as he held his painful head, sensing that he had lost something from himself. When he looked around, he found himself inside a small, but not too shabby room.

He went to the door, but it seemed that the door was locked. He called out a few times, but there wasn't any answer. Finally, the guard came and answered his question after he banged on the door for an hour.

"Prison?" Raymond muttered fearfully as he realized what was happening.

"NO! Call my niece! She will bail me out!"

Raymond put his hope on his niece who was engaged with the most influential man in the world, not knowing that she was the one who had left him here in the first place.

"Your niece had left something for you. Here," the prison guard handed a note to Raymond.

The scientist snatched the letter from the guard, and recognized Gwen's handwriting on the letter. Gwen criticized him for his actions and hoped that he would turn into a new leaf, inside the prison. She wanted to come, but as Ryan noticed she was too heartbroken, he suggested she write the letter instead.

Raymond finally remembered that Gwen and Ryan were the one who had caught him when he was hiding in the sewer. His hand started to shake wildly and he covered his eyes with the letter.

"W-what…have I done?"

The letter became wet from his tears as Raymond remembered the face of every victim he experimented on.

Located in Finland, the prison would provide Raymond the basic necessities for him to atone for his crime for the rest of his life. Gwen and his family would come to visit him from time to time. SHIELD won't be able to find Raymond as he was registered under a fake identity that Ryan had made for him specifically.

The rehabilitation facility there will make sure that Raymond was protected from any outside force that wanted to use him for their gains.

Only after a few weeks inside the prison did Raymond accept the fact that no one will be brave enough to save him and cross the path with the Ryan knight. He was afraid that SHIELD, who was helping him in the shadows, would come to silence him, but no such thing happened.

He then wrote a letter to Gwen, explaining to her that he understood her decision to put him in a prison, and also warned her about several things.

There was also the curious fact that he couldn't recall any of the data from his experiments. He wouldn't be able to recreate the serum for the rest of his life even if he worked extremely hard for it.

With no benefit to tempt people to save him, Raymond sighed and stayed obediently in prison – living his life quietly as he atoned for his crime.

Deep inside the multiverse.

An old-white haired woman with a blindfold on her eyes was sitting on a wheelchair. In front of her, was a glimpse of various multiverses seen from the cobweb that was strewn together.

The screen among the cobwebs are showing a black spiderman, japanese spiderman, spidergirl with a robot, superior spiderman with 4 metal tentacles coming from behind him, a spider-ham, and more – battling various creatures across the multiverses.

"So, the spider totem failed. After all I have done, now all I can do is push the spider awakening back a few years," the incarnation of the spider totem said in a shaky voice.

She had been trying her hardest, even covering the eyes of the aberration inside the universe she was trying to breach into.

The spider-verse does make a genius other than the chosen genius into a bumbling buffoon. Countless geniuses in the spider-verse world didn't manage to find out the identity of the chosen spider for the longest time because of the web of destiny influence.

However, the purple-eyed aberration was too strong for her to get what she wanted. Her effort to let the Jackal free was in vain, as all the knowledge that Jackal had was gone. Now she can only live inside a small spider, in which a tracing spell was stuck onto her.

She refocused on the other multiverses that needed the intervention of the web.

"I want to see you," The woman smiled as the figure of Ryan Knight was displayed in one of her cobwebs.

"I want you…"

Suddenly Ryan looked directly into the destiny screen, his purple eyes glowed ruthlessly.

*BAM*

His image shattered inside the web of destiny. Although he had found the peeper, Ryan wasn't free.

The incarnation of the spider totem with a stoic face for thousands of years smiled briefly before her face became stoic again. She then continued her words before she was cut off.

"...to do well. The spider's fate will be on you."

The old lady gave up on intervening in Ryan's universe. By all means, she wasn't hostile. The web of destiny was created by the spider totem to protect the multiverse.

The intervention of fate in Ryan's universe was pushed back, and he is now responsible for the universe's safety — whether he likes it or not.

Inside Ryan's universe.

"Damn, how many people are watching me?" Ryan said, unamused by the intervention of the multiverse level force.

He didn't realize it yet, but him preventing Gwen from becoming the Ghost Spider, would pull him into some weird stuff in the future.

Harlem, New York.

In front of a red-brick, 4 storey house, Ryan stopped his black luxury sedan and got out of the car.

The neighbors stared at the out-of-place white man that seemed to be lost in their neighborhood. Not only that, the man is looking rich too.

If the gangs of the area tried to mess with the white man, it would cause some problems to the neighborhood there which mostly consisted of minorities and were having problems with the corrupt police on a daily basis.

"Young man, are you lost?" A soft spoken, African-American old lady with a cane approached Ryan.

"No beautiful lady, I am at the right place," Ryan said with a friendly tone to let the gawker ease their worries.

"Waait, you're…" The old lady scrutinized her face as she seemed to recognize Ryan from somewhere, but she was not sure from where.

Suddenly, a random kid on a tricycle yelled in excitement. "Ryan Knight!"

"What?"

"Ryan Knight is here?"

"The billionaire Avenger?"

"Why did he come here?"

The initial excitement turned into restlessness as the closely-knitted group became worried for the ones that Ryan was searching for. Being an Avenger, they related Ryan with the authorities that always created problems for them.

The fact that all the Avenger's were white was also a problem for these minorities. Ryan chuckled and said loudly to the old lady in front of him, so that the others would hear it too.

"I am searching for Ava Ayala. I want to thank her for being a witness for an incident. The culprit was caught now so I figured I need to tell her myself."

"Ohh, that Ava. She's a nice kid, you know. Always helping the other people here," The old lady proceeded to escort Ryan to her house. Ava Ayala lived inside one of her rental houses, so Ryan got a free pass to Ayala's room.

Ryan spoke nicely with the old lady who even offered him some granola cakes. He ate it hungrily without any pretense, making the old lady's impression on him rise even higher.

"Ava, are you up?" The old lady knocked on the 22 year old girl's door. She knocked for a while but didn't receive any answer.

"I guess she is still sleeping Ray-ray," The old lady turns to Ryan who had his face stuffed and called him by the nickname he asked her to.

"It's okay, I can wait for a while. Got no other place to go," Ryan made a white lie. He had plenty of other appointments today. The Avenger Tower, the Knight Industry, the one-eyed pirate that kept contacting him, the hidden island, and more.

He stayed because he knew that the one he wanted to visit was already up. She was moving very slowly to open the door as she was still feeling groggy.

"Nana, why are you-"

The barely dressed girl in her underwear became startled when she saw another person standing next to Nana.

Quickly, she closed the door. She opened it after a minute as she got dressed, not knowing that Ryan already saw everything she wanted to hide.

"Mr. Knight..why are you here?" Ava said in a worried tone. She assumed that something was wrong with her from the incident, and that was why one of the Avengers was here.

"Don't worry Miss Ayala. I just came here to talk…privately if I may," Ryan said as he stared at the tiger pendant she was wearing.

He didn't come here to inspect, as he had already checked it before. He noticed her when she was attacked and finally came here to be a guide for her – for whatever it is that is going to happen to her.

After Nana went to the kitchen to give them some privacy, Ryan entered Ayala's messy room and sat on an empty chair. The room was messy from research of the animal spirit, myth and legends, not because she didn't take care of the room.

"I'm sure you're wondering why you keep dreaming about the tiger," Ryan asked as he picked up a notebook that Ayala had been scribbling on.

"Yes, I do…How do you know about that…"

Ryan chucked and answered her question. "You already know my nickname right?"

Ayala widened her eyes. She thought that an Avenger coming to visit was shocking enough.

'His name… the Oracle!'

"Can you see the future?" she asked excitedly. Maybe he can explain the things that she had been worried about, even causing her to get a lack of sleep because of it.

"Hell no. I do however know what is happening with you right now. And the cause of it."

Ayala breathed out loudly as she really thought Ryan could see the future. "What is happening to me then?"

"Well, the same thing that happened to your father, Hector Ayala."

Ryan slid an Avenger name card that also acted as a key to enter the Avenger Tower's first floor.

The pendant she was wearing was now activated because of Jackals serum and the pendant had come from the same source — the High Evolutionary. Soon, she'll find herself with a tremendous amount of power as she will be transformed into the White Tiger.

Ryan decided to throw an olive branch toward her, and pull her to expand the tiny number of the Avengers, if she decided to do something about the power. Also, it will be a great way for him to monitor the high evolutionary creation, in case something went sideways.

"I will formally invite you, Miss Ayala. But I won't force you to join us. If you decide to use that power for other things, that's up to you."

Ayala became silent as she touched the pendant on her neck. Then, Ryan gave her father's glowing resume — his heroic saving of others, on her table. She picked it up and started to tear up while she read it.

Ryan let her process the information about his father. She had been searching for her father for a long time, not knowing that he had already perished from the world.

"Thank you Mr. Knight," Ayala wiped her tears with the edge of her sleeve. Before Ryan could mutter a word, a shout from the outside left him with his mouth half opened.

"Hey whose car is this? Don't you know it's illegal to park here without our permission? "

"Hammerhead," Ayala flashed a ruthless glint in her eyes as the gang member who wanted to force Nana to sell her house had come back again.

Through the tinted windows, she saw that Nana was confronting the gang member that tried to smash Ryan's car.

"Nana!"

Ayala ran outside the door to go help Nana Brown, the woman who took her in when she had nothing and no one.

"...That seems to be my cue," Ryan stood up calmly and walked outside the door at his own pace. When he reached outside the house, the situation seemed to have deteriorated.

"Do you find someone else to sell the house to, huh?" The gang member with a rectangular head asked menacingly as he threatened Nana with a metal bat.

"(sigh) I thought I have already passed the low-level thug stage," Ryan interjected from the door, making all the attention on him.

"WHO ARE YOU HUH???? DON'T YOU KNOW THAT THIS AREA IS THE HAMMERHEAD GANG'S AREA????" The rectangular head thug walked right in front of Ryan's face trying to threaten him.

"Boss-" his follower widened his eyes in horror as he realized with whom his boss was talking to. The boss slapped the followers hand away from stopping him.

"I will skin you alive and put you on my car's rooftop like a prized hunt, boy!" Hammerhead growled menacingly.

He was thinking that Nana had someone backing her up when he saw the luxury car, but when he saw it was only a young boy, he didn't feel so afraid anymore.

"Hammerhead huh. Did you hit yourself with a hammer everyday, that's why your head is so flat?" Ryan said teasingly as he cracked his fist.

"You DARE BOY!"

"Boss…that's an Avenger…" The lackey was finally able to whisper to his boss.

Hammerhead opened his mouth wide, almost dislocating his jaws. "Mr-mr-mr-mr Oracle sir- I-"

Before he could explain, he and his goon's visions turned blurry and they fell on the ground. Ayala widened her eyes as she saw the combat capabilities of Ryan who was referred to as a support.

Ryan approached Nana to help her get up. Then, he said to Ayala. "Call me, alright?"

"I…will," Ayala replied with determination. If there is a chance she can do good for her neighborhood, she will definitely do so.

Tying all of the goons and Hammerhead on top of his car, Ryan said goodbyes to Nana and drove away. Hammerhead was trying to get the occupants in the area to sell their houses to him for an extremely cheap price before he sold it to the residential real estate titan, Chief Wilson Fisk for a profit.

He was investigated a few times, but he kept getting bailed out. The police didn't have any evidence to catch Hammerhead, that was why he was still loose.

Of course, Ryan was able to get a signed confession from the guy in less than a minute. The newly started Hammerhead that will soon grow his empire into one of the most notorious gangs in New York, was cut short before his potential can show itself.

Even the Kingpin couldn't save Hammerhead when he heard what that idiot did. Threatening an Avenger member? He had dug his own grave .

A month passed after the Jackal incident. The Avengers had been training hard every single day and their cooperation had reached a high level.

Finally, they received a report from Jarvis for the thing that they had been preparing themselves for.

"Tarot has reappeared," Bruce said urgently.

"Damn, he came when Cap wasn't here," Barton said as he prepared his bow and arrow.

"Why are you picking up a bow Barton?" Tony suddenly walked into the room and asked.

"Aren't we going to go fight him?" Natasha chided.

"Nah, he already disappeared. And SHIELD won't let us to the site, but will share anything they found with us," Tony informed them with dissatisfaction in his tone.

"You know what he had hit?" Natasha asked again. Tony shook his head as he was in the process of finding out about it.

"The Lemurian Star. It was a SHIELD satellite launch vessel," Ryan walked in and shared his information with the rest of the group.

"Was?" Barton asked.

"Yep, it was abandoned a month ago when Tarot first attacked. SHIELD had been cooperating with NASA instead and had launched a series of satellites, creating a network of prying eyes from space," Ryan pulled up the data he had in the holographic screen, making it available for everyone.

"It is part of the quantum threat analysis they are currently working on. I still don't have all the details on that part."

Natasha's eyes shook a little as she stared at Ryan in horror. Without any help whatsoever, Ryan managed to find out about SHIELD's top secret. She knew about the quantum threat analysis, however she didn't know the details about the Insight Project.

"Also…I analyzed the satellite activity from when Tarot attacked the earlier bases the previous month. There was a specific spike in spatial frequency when he…well 'visited' a base. However…"

"There wasn't one on the Lemurian Star." Tony reads the data quickly and comes to the realization.

"Yep, someone is framing him. Although he would do stuff like this so I'm not so sure," Ryan said.

He was sure, as he was the guy. He also knew who was the one who had been using his name for the attack, and he applauded the pirate's bravery to do so.

"Who in the world would do that?" Barton was puzzled. Who was in their right mind to tempt the psycho into coming back?

"Hey where did Steve go?" Tony suddenly realized the annoying voice that kept telling him to behave more like a leader was silent during the conversation.

"He is in London with Kai. Don't know which part as he was being extremely private about it," Ryan said.

In London.

Steve was standing in front of a two-storey house door, and was hesitant to knock on it.

"After all these years, will she recognize me?" Steve muttered before he braced himself for what was about to come.

Finally, he would meet the person who had been waiting for 70 years as he missed their dance – Peggy Carter.
