"Miss Ella, we have no such report about any accident but trust us, we will investigate," the officer informed her, but Ella almost turned hysterical. "No! No! she will come and get me, please keep me locked up!"
The officers exchanged glances with each other, "a few of the screws in her head are loose…" they thought. But Ella was adamant.
The officer took one look at her and relented. They kept her there for a few hours while they checked their records. But they did not find any 'official' accident of the sort recorded nor any hit and run around that same time or place.
Finally, they told her that they would investigate and get back to her.
"Miss Ella, according to the, 'corpus delicti' rule, we cannot charge you but we will investigate it! You may go now Miss Ella Menas!" The officer pursed his lips and all admiration they had for her earlier had run dry from their eyes!
