The next morning, the car was ready in the driveway. Kai stepped back into the house, realizing Kalea hadn't come out yet. Inside, she remained seated on the living room sofa, gazing at Selma, who was peacefully asleep in her lap. Kalea's face was clouded with hesitation, her fingers gripping the baby blanket tightly.
"Lea, are you ready? It's okay if you need more time," Kai said gently, placing a light hand on her slender shoulder.
Kalea looked up, her bittersweet smile paired with a nod. Rising from her seat, she cradled Selma carefully before following Kai to the car.
