Synopsis
Amy Cheng I’m the daughter of a power couple, and let’s face it, grew up a little smothered. On impulse I decided to go to my mother’s homeland for university to break free. When she warned me that America can be cruel, she was joking, right? Right? But mom, forget Americans, I think this one American boy might just drive me back to China all by himself! Mason Amy Cheng is a firecracker, and I can’t seem to keep my eyes off her. So what do I do? Challenge her to out drink me. That seemed like a great idea until she starts cursing me out in a foreign language faster than jackrabbit’s heartbeat. I have to admit though, it was kinda hot.

Chapter 1 - Chapter One

"Are you sure?" My guidance counselor questions me again, glancing back at my university choices.

There's only one.

"Yes! I passed all exams and requirements already." I smile sheepishly, trying to act firm and decisive.

"And your parents are aware that you applied to a college outside of China?" He raises his eyebrows meaningfully while I groan. Mr. Chen has met my parents and knows for a fact that they must have no idea.

"Listen, I went to a conference about this university. One of the professors is even from here. I'll have someone looking out for me." I spread my arms wide, emphasize my excitement. The world is your oyster or something.

"I suggest you sit down with your parents first." Mr. Chen shoves his hand through his hair, as if checking for any hair loss the stress of the situation possibly gave him.

"Alright! I don't see how they can turn me down." I pump fake confidence into my tone.

"No!" Dad roars, staring at my acceptance paperwork.

I grin sheepishly and look at my mom for help. For some reason she looks worse off from the situation than my dad. Wasn't she the one who told me to chase after my dreams passionately?

"Honey, I know you think this is an amazing idea, but I need you to rethink it." Her eyes glisten with tears as she slips into English.

"Wait, what do you mean? I thought you'd support me!" I stand up from my chair so fast it falls over.

"America can be cruel, especially to foreigners." She glances away as her words trail off softly. Dad approaches her and wraps his arms tightly around mom's shoulders. My heart sinks.

"What does that even mean?" I push despite knowing the topic seems to pain her. Dad responds instead.

"The states aren't receptive towards Asians. It can be dangerous." He holds mom tighter while staring into my eyes.

"So? The exchange program is popular and I'll be protected." I'm not backing down.

"Is this really what you want?" Mom sniffles.

I run to her and hug both of my parents tightly. Pressing my face against her shoulder, I nod my head, inhaling her comforting perfume. She might be the only person who will understand how far I'll go to make my dreams come true, even crossing the ocean alone to follow through.
