"I do not believe a word that you say."
"What can I do to make you believe me?"
"Nothing. There is nothing you can do in this world that will make you believe you, because I once did, and that got me burnt."
"What is it that you are asking of me?"
I hold my belly, laughter bubbling in my throat but it's hysterical. He is asking me what I am asking of him. I think it's not laughter … its anger.
"What did you ask me?" it comes out in a whisper. I turn to look at him, and I find that he has bowed his head, and his tie is undone.
"I am asking you to start over, but you don't believe me when I tell you that things will be different. What do you want from me?"
"It's not what I want, but you taking the responsibility, accountability for what you did which destroyed what we had."
"You cheated on me," his eyes flare.
